Deep within the heart of the Smoky Mountains exists a not-so-quiet mountain town that while once was deemed sleepy, is today bustling with life. Not only is it vibrant and alive, but it is also popular with adventurers from all over the state and with those who want to settle down and reconnect with nature. Bryson City is located right on the banks of the Tuckasegee River. Most of Swain County is located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and Bryson City offers close proximity to Nantahala National Forest and Nantahala Gorge. While this has long brought rugged hikers and adventure seekers, in recent years the town has also attracted tourists seeking a serene mountain escape.
Bryson City has around 1300 year-round residents. Smithsonian Magazine recently included the town in their list of "20 Best Small Towns to Visit in 2016." Bryson City was also deemed "Coolest Mountain Town" by Romantic Asheville.
Hop on board
Bryson City is home to the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. Scenic train rides take you through some of the most remote sections of western North Carolina. You'll ride alongside rivers, dip through valleys, and climb mountains.
A great way to ring in the holidays for all ages is the Polar Express train ride. The 75-minute ride brings the magic of the Polar Express to life. It departs from Bryson City and heads right to the North Pole where Santa waits to greet the kiddos. On the way back, you can sing Christmas carols and children will receive their own silver sleigh bell from Santa. The Polar Express started Nov. 11th and runs through the end of December. What a memorable experience!
Eat & Drink
Bryson City has many amazing, diverse restaurants to choose from.
Grab a delicious hot dog or sub at The Filling Station. This cool and casual restaurant is a must stop in Bryson City.
If you're looking for something fancier, yet still rustic, The Cork & Bean Bistro is exactly what you'd expect from a mountainside eatery. It's inviting, cozy, and filled with delicious, fresh food. Stop by for breakfast on Saturday or Sunday!
You can even dine riverside at River's End restaurant located at the Nantahala Outdoor Center.
If you've jumped on the craft beer train (no pun intended) Bryson City is home to three breweries, with one of the most well known being Nantahala Brewing Company. You can catch mountain and railroad views from its location just across the street from GSMR. Nantahala Brewing company also brews their beer with crystal clear, pure Great Smoky Mountain water from one of the purest watersheds on the planet.
Plenty of adventure
While one wouldn't dare jump in the chilly mountain water in the coming months, the warmer season attracts adventure enthusiasts to Bryson City. You'll find all kinds of outdoor experiences, from whitewater rafting at the Nantahala Outdoor Center, to hiking, Deep Creek tubing, fly fishing, kayaking, zip lining, and horseback riding.
It seems artists just love taking refuge in the mountains of North Carolina (can you blame them?) and you can browse through galleries featuring local and non-local artists. Even if you're visiting in the winter, there are plenty of attractions and things to do. Don't miss the chance to visit Wild Fern studios, pictured above.
Unique lodging
The Everrett Boutique Hotel (and bistro) is quaint, lavish, and a unique experience for an overnight stay. The hotel is perfect for those traveling to ride on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. There are also plenty of cozy mountain cabins to really make the most of the scenery. Hidden Creek Cabins start as low as $99/night; they're situated right in the heart of nature and great for the adventure seeker or outdoor enthusiast.
While Bryson City mainly flies under the radar, you can't blame them for wanting to keep the charm to themselves. The town has an unspoiled, authentic feel that you won't find elsewhere. While it's ideal to visit in the warmer months so you can take advantage of all the outdoor activities offered, there's still plenty to do in the off season. With so much going for it, this is the perfect town to relax and escape to!
If you're looking for another unique town, on the other end of the state, how about one where even cars aren't allowed? This town is a world away from it all.
