Scattered all across New York you can find charming small towns that are worth taking a trip to. Hiding out in Greene County amongst the Catskill Mountains is a small village that as of 2010, only has a population of 539 residents! So small you'll run into just one intersection of traffic lights, this hidden gem of our state is more than worth a visit.

Tucked between some of our favorite outdoor attractions, Tannersville is now known as the Painted Village In The Sky.

An incorporated village since 1895, Tannersville can be found right between Hunter Mountain and Kaaterskill Falls. Hunter Mountain attracts a variety of explorers coming to check out the mountain's adrenaline-pumping zip line and also to enjoy an exciting day of skiing, bringing visitors right through this small village.

Featuring just one intersection with traffic lights, you'll quickly fall in love with this charming and colorful small town.

While Tannersville may be small in size, it manages to have plenty of places where you can stay and/or eat.

Pictured above, you can see Villa Vosilla, a little resort in town that will take you back in time. A favorite place for visitors to stay for more than 50 years, this is just one of the several unique places you can stay in the area.

In Tannersville you'll find plenty to keep yourself busy with outdoors, the town even has the Mountain Top Arboretum that has over 170 acres of beautiful trails and boardwalks for you to explore!

But what's the real reason we love Tannersville? You'll find out on Main Street.

You may have already begun to caught on to how unique this town is, but right on Main Street you'll find that many of the businesses here in town have quite the vibrant and eye-catching exterior! Pictured above you can see Pancho Villa's Mexican Restaurant, just one of the many amazing places to eat that you'll discover on Main Street!

Tannersville's pop of color began with one resident's home and eventually spread throughout the entire town.

Pictured here you can see the Last Chance Antiques & Cheese Cafe. While this building may not stand out as much as the others, it's the details on these buildings that will fascinate you! Look long enough and you'll realize that on the shutters of Last Chance you can view paintings of cheese, utensils, food and other things you may find inside of the store.

Elena Patterson of Tannersville originally painted her house with electric and eye-catching colors, quickly drawing in curious locals and out-of-town visitors to see the unique work of art. While the town is in a popular area of the Catskills, it long remained unnoticed and served as just a place to travel through. Elena realized that spreading the cheerful color throughout the town may work to its advantage and proposed an idea to paint the buildings of Tannersville to the mayor.

From restaurants to shops and many other businesses, the majority of the town was on board with getting a flashy makeover.

Pictured above, you can see first the Peoria Emporium as well as Maggie's Krooked Cafe, just two of the many buildings in town to receive a splash of color.

Maggie's Krooked Cafe carries out the town's unique character with funky decor and great tasting dishes.

From Mexican food to your favorite American dishes as well as healthy options at Maggie's Juice Bar, there's a variety of restaurants in town that will be able to appeal to your appetite! After a day of exploring around Kaaterskill Falls, one of New York's tallest waterfalls or experiencing adventure on Hunter Mountain, you'll want to fuel up somewhere that has incredible food.

You'll also find a delightful general store on Main Street, a place you'll instantly wish you had in your hometown!

Pictured above you can see one of the two Catskill Mountain Country Stores that can be found in New York! Every store in this town has it's own unique features and paint job. After the Paint Project was founded in Tannersville, Elena Patterson worked closely with all of the business owners to come up with color schemes and designs that would best suit the building's character.

While Tannersville has continued to become more colorful over the years, in recent weeks the Antique Center received an incredible new makeover.

Pictured above you can see the Tannersville Antique & Artisan Center before the side of the building received its latest work of art. If you go to their official Facebook, you can see the newly painted mural of Rip Van Winkle that was done by artist Justin Badenhorst! If you aren't familiar with why Rip Van Winkle ties into the history of the Catskill Mountains then let us fill you in, author Washington Irving wrote a now well-known short story back in 1819 that was set in the Catskills and featured a character by the name of Rip Van Winkle. Today, Tannersville even has a lake in town named after the character and now features an enormous but stunning mural of the character as well. Just one more reason to love this place!
