3 Fantastic Fall Day Trips In New Jersey, Spanning North, Central, And South
Explore three distinct fall day trip destinations in New Jersey, each offering unique natural and cultural experiences.
New Jersey may be a small state but some locals see North, Central, and South Jersey as being worlds apart. I hear you! Though I'm happy to drive an hour or two for some seasonal fun, I understand that's not the case for everyone. I wanted to offer all of our wonderful readers convenient fall day trip options in one article. Here are three options, broken down by region.
North Jersey: Leonard J. Buck Garden, Far Hills
One of the premier rock gardens in the eastern United States, Leonard J. Buck Garden is a 33-acre oasis in Somerset County.
It offers woodlands, streams, ponds, exotic and native plants, and rock outcroppings.
Most popular during the spring, you won't want to miss it in the fall! It's actually a series of smaller gardens, centered around micro-climates. There are 2.5 miles of picturesque pathways to explore.
Central Jersey: Grounds For Sculpture, Hamilton
Grounds For Sculpture is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful places in New Jersey.
A 42-acre sculpture park and garden, you'll find over 200 striking sculptures here.
Some stand out while others are tucked away, blending in with the surrounding nature. There are peacocks, lakes, ponds, and plenty of fun, family-friendly activities to enjoy. Have a sculpture hunt or download one of the Explorer Guides on the Grounds For Sculpture website. Much of the park is wheelchair accessible.
South Jersey: Wharton State Forest, Hammonton
Wharton State Forest is the largest tract of land in the New Jersey State Park System.
The park offers miles of hiking trails, boating, picnicking, abandoned ruins, and more!
A favorite activity is exploring Batsto Village!
Batsto Village is the site of a former bog iron and glass making center that dates back to the 1700s. Visitors can take a free cell phone tour that covers a dozen unique sites.
Wherever you live in the state, these day trip destinations are worth a drive. There are so many other options but these are all local fall favorites.
