We could all use a break every now and then. New Jersey is a busy, bustling state with over 1,200 residents per square mile. We're the most densely populated state in America (Massachusetts comes in second with approximately 880 residents per square mile), so it can seem hard to find a little peace. Where can we get away from it all? Here are some of our favorite peaceful and relaxing places in no particular order.
1. High Point State Park - Wantage/Montague
A popular place for hiking with a variety of beautiful trails and scenic landscapes, few things beat the view from the base of High Point Monument. It's absolutely breathtaking! It doesn't matter if the park is packed - when you stare out at the rolling hills and valleys that surround you, you'll feel like there's nothing else. We do not encourage you to sit at the edge of the monument, lest you feel like your leg is broken.
2. Grounds For Sculpture - Hamilton
This picturesque place perfectly blends art and nature. You'll find dozens of beautiful sculptures on the grounds, along with ponds, peacocks, lakes, gardens, and whimsical, winding paths. It's magical.
3. Barnegat Lighthouse State Park - Barnegat Light
A lovely place all year long, it's especially peaceful in the winter. Whenever you visit, the short and sweet Maritime Forest Trail is a must.
4. Franklin Lakes Nature Preserve - Franklin Lakes
This 120-acre nature preserve is a relaxing place for fishing, hiking, and birdwatching. Kayaking is also allowed seasonally.
5. Deep Cut Gardens - Middletown
If you enjoy gardening, you'll love Deep Cut Gardens! This public garden was made just for you. Dedicated to the home gardener, the gorgeous gardens will inspire you. Check out the take one, leave one seed exchange station if you're looking to grow your own collection.
6. Parvin State Park - Pittsgrove
Wildlife lovers, this one is for you. Relax in nature and keep an eye out for a wide range of birds, reptiles, and other animals.
7. Speedwell Lake Park - Morristown
Stroll along the lakeside trail and take in the lovely little waterfall.
8. Mad Lavender Farm - Milford
What's more relaxing than beautiful scenery and the smell of lavender? Maybe the option to try goat yoga or crafting workshops? Find your zen here.
9. Wharton State Forest - Hammonton
Wharton State Forest is New Jersey's largest state park, spanning 122,000 acres. It's got something for everyone - boating, fishing, hiking, historic villages, abandoned ruins, and more!
10. Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary - Stone Harbor
The first National Natural Landmark in New Jersey, the site includes a freshwater pond and marsh, along with a maritime forest.
Have you been to any of these places? What would you say is the most peaceful place in New Jersey?
