New Jersey's museums are occasionally overshadowed by big-name New York museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural History. While both are wonderful, the Garden State can hold its own. Jersey City's Liberty Science Center is home to the largest planetarium in the western hemisphere and Ogdensburg's Sterling Hill Mining Museum offers an actual mine tour AND is home to some of the rarest fluorescent minerals in the world. Today, the focus is on a fantastic maritime museum that's perfect for families...
The Tuckerton Seaport & Bayshore Museum is an immersive experience that brings New Jersey's rich coastal culture and history to life.
Tuckerton Seaport sits on 40 acres along Tuckerton Creek and is home to 15 buildings with museum exhibits, a Lighthouse, Gift Shop, Visitor Center, and cozy coffee shop/art gallery.
Each recreated building highlights a different part of history or local life. Joe Dayton's sawmill focuses on cranberry and blueberry farming. Parsons Clam & Oyster House teaches guests about clam and oyster harvesting in the area - you can even practice being a clammer. Don't miss the folk life exhibits in the lighthouse, or the view from the top - and keep an eye out for the Jersey Devil.
There are live demonstrations, a trivia-based mini-golf course, and additional exhibits on hunting, fishing, and woodcarving. There's even a mini-museum with dozens of gorgeous surfboards from different decades.
Guests will also enjoy frequent events like concerts, classes, food trucks, and fireworks.
Then there are the free ferry rides along with scenic boat rides and tours.
And locals, I've got a hidden gem for you. The on-site cafe is truly a treat, and you don't need to pay admission to access it. It's got smoothies, muffins, other light fare, free wi-fi, and board games. Plus, you'll find art for sale, and other unique gifts lining the walls.
There's truly something for everyone who has any interest in history or shore life. Kids and adults alike will enjoy it! If you're interested in visiting, check out their website for all the info. For the best experience, visit on the weekends - there's a lot more going on. Weekdays work too, if you want to avoid the crowds.
