It's a little-known waterfront town in New Jersey where you'll find the best the Jersey Shore has to offer, but without the crowds and chaos you'll find in many towns. I know the Jersey Shore—I'm there almost every week when the weather gets warm—but even I'm surprised by some of the towns that are hiding out there. Avalon is one of those towns, a charming little retreat that's built its beachside charm into every corner. The last census showed the town had a full-time population of only 1,243, so no matter when you visit, it'll be a laid-back place.

Like any beach town in New Jersey, you can tell the town loves the ocean. Just walking along Avalon's main street, you'll see charming beach houses where the balcony faces the water. The architecture alone is worth a visit, but the town is also known for its tourist spots. In particular, the town is popular with mini-golf fans—Go Fish Mini Golf is a unique nautical-themed course!

Avalon's dining scene offers both casual and upscale options, and it's not a surprise that the town has a great seafood selection, given how close it is to the water! However, there's only one spot here that has locals and tourists packed in every single morning: Uncle Bill's Pancake House, one of the most iconic breakfast spots in the Garden State. I'm a huge fan of the potato pancakes.

Best Time To Visit Avalon

If you want the full Jersey Shore experience, it's best to visit during tourist season, as not all attractions and restaurants may be open in winter. However, Avalon is a town with full-time residents, and if you're looking for a more laid-back experience, an off-season visit can be incredibly peaceful. Avalon is part of Seven-Mile Beach, one of the most unique features on the Jersey Shore, and its surf views are stunning no matter the season. A road trip down the shore is also a great opportunity to visit this area and get a first glimpse of it for a longer vacation down the line.
