That's why we love the idea of escaping for the weekend to a place we've never been. In addition to the sheer beauty of the state, many small towns offer fun activities and great food. While we'd love to see them all, these are just a few of the towns we recommend.

Meredith, Belknap County

Meredith is one of the most visited towns in the state, but that's for a good reason. It sits on the banks of Lake Winnipesaukee, making it fun for the summer. Visit the local restaurants and general stores to really get a taste for the state.

2. Errol, Coos County

If your idea of the perfect weekend away includes running into as few people as possible, this is the escape for you! There are just under 300 residents here and there are just four people per square mile. Spend your time exploring Umbagog State Park, one of the most underrated spots for nature in the state.

3. Ellsworth, Grafton County

Fun fact! Ellsworth is a dry town, which means you won't be able to buy any alcohol here. But who needs the diversion when you've got this much beauty to appreciate. Those who are looking for some activity will love coming here to explore Mount Kineo.

4. Hart's Location, Carroll County

Lovey little Hart's Location has a population of just 41, making it the smallest municipality in the state. But what it lacks in number of people it makes up for in beauty. The town is home to Crawford Notch State Park, making it a fantastic place to spend the weekend hiking and enjoying fresh air.

5. Orange, Grafton County

The small town of Orange dates back to 1769, which makes it one of the oldest in the state. It's also home to Mount Cardigan, one of the most hiked peaks not just in America but globally. If you love adventure, consider this town a must-visit.

6. Chatham, Carroll County

With just under 350 residents, this is another very small town in New Hampshire. But it's rare that the town feels empty. This is a go-to spot for those who love enjoying the outdoors. In the warmer months Upper Kimball Pond is fun and those who enjoy a challenge will love hiking South Baldface and Kearsage North.

7. Keene, Cheshire County

Larger than the other towns on this list, Keene is sure to keep you busy all weekend. In addition to the fact that Oprah named it one of the best in the state, you'll find trails, a children's museum and lots of restaurants.
