The Cleanest Lake In New Hampshire Is An Ideal Summer Day Trip

Despite the fact that New Hampshire has just 13 miles of coastline, most people here consider a beach trip the best say to cool down when the weather gets hot. But, those who love this state know that there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the water in the Granite State. Lakes exist throughout the state, but if you grew up going to the ocean you might think that lakes are mucky and muddy. The reality is that our state's lakes have some of the cleanest water anywhere in the country! This particular body of water is said to be the cleanest lake in New Hampshire and we plan on visiting it a few times this season.

At 2.5 miles wide and 6 miles long, Newfound Lake in Grafton County is actually one of the largest in the state. It’s third only to Winnipesaukee and Squam.

While it’s large and hugely beautiful, its cleanliness is what really makes it stand out. But, how is it so clean?

For one, it’s deep! This means that a lot of water volume is moving through this body of water at all times.

Further, the lake is surrounded by 100 square miles of completely undeveloped land, which means it doesn’t have the businesses and homes that tend to cause pollution.

Given that the lake is so clean, locals have worked hard to make sure it stays that way. All of this means that Newfound Lake is one of the cleanest lakes in the state and, many believe, the entire country!

The lake has at least 22 species of fish, as well as miles of coast, making this a great place to explore by foot on small hikes or by hopping into a boat to see what lies below.

The rural location means it’s quiet, making the area wonderful for stargazing and sunset watching.

And, when you’re ready to jump in Wellington State Park has you covered. Located in Bristol, this park has the longest freshwater beach in the state. Add the picnic tables, soft sand and available exploration space and you’ve got a pretty great way to spend a summer day.

Newfound Lake is best visited by heading to Wellington State Park, which is open on weekends beginning on May 13, 2023, and open full-time beginning on May 27, 2023.
