The first blow to the town came in the 1880s, when the remote community faced a smallpox outbreak that killed six of its residents. Then in the 1920s, a flood damaged the town and destroyed the mills. With the heart of the town gone, Livermore languished in an in-between state. The town's industry and population were dying, yet it was still clinging to life.

For 25 years, the town hung on until the last residents left by 1950. Today, the ruins of Livermore are buried in the White Mountains, recognizable if you know where to look.
