The Small Montana Town Locals Hope Stays Off Tourists’ Radar
Kila, Montana, may be small, but its quiet charm, friendly community, and scenic surroundings make it a place locals hope tourists overlook.
The small towns near Glacier National Park and Flathead Lake in northwestern Montana certainly receive a lot of attention—and rightly so. Places like Whitefish, Bigfork, and Kalispell are bucket-list-worthy destinations with breathtaking scenery, charming communities, and countless outdoor activities. However, there is one hidden small town in Montana, approximately 10 miles from Kalispell, that tends to fly under tourists’ radars—Kila. This town is small, yet beautiful. It may not have as many attractions as nearby towns, but it definitely should not be overlooked. It is a delightful basecamp in one of our favorite corners of the Treasure State.
Why This Hidden Small Town in Montana Flies Under the Radar
Kila is the type of place that's easy to drive by. With a population of approximately 400 residents, it’s certainly small, and its proximity to larger nearby tourist towns like Whitefish and Kalispell makes it easy to overlook. But if you want to escape the crowds found in those larger towns, Kila is a wonderful alternative. It is known for its quiet community and friendly residents.
Best Things to Do in This Small Town Near Flathead Lake
Kila sits next to Smith Lake and the Smith Lake Waterfowl Production Area. Smith Lake is approximately 400 acres and is an excellent fishing destination, especially if you're hoping to reel in largemouth bass, perch, and walleye. But fish aren’t the only creatures you may see here as this waterfowl production area is a popular stop for migratory birds. Depending on when you visit, you may see quite a sight in the air and on the water.
Ashley Lake, which is much larger than Smith Lake and quieter than Flathead Lake, is another body of water that’s just a short drive away. It is also a fantastic fishing and boating destination, as well as an excellent swimming spot in the summer months. There are three campgrounds around the lake if you wish to spend a night under the stars, and if you visit in the autumn months, the lush forests surrounding the water transform into a sea of color—it may be one of the best places to view fall foliage in northwestern Montana.

Of course, if you would rather spend your day on the trails, you’ll find several hikes near Kila, including the nearby Notch Trail, Overlook Trail, and Plum Creek Road Loop. This hike is just under 4 miles and has a gradual incline. You’ll walk through thick forests, and to overlooks offering views of the Flathead Valley. The path is wide and easy to follow.
Additionally, if you are looking for a longer trail, south of Kila is the Blacktail Mountain Trail, a 7.4-mile loop that is gorgeous year-round. Fall is a stunning time to explore as you'll walk through a forest covered in autumn’s palette. In the winter, this is a popular cross-country skiing and snowshoeing spot as you'll venture next to trees weighed down with heavy snow.
Where to Stay and Eat in Kila, Montana
One of the things I love most about Kila is that it’s where you can experience a quiet, relaxed getaway in an area of the country that draws thousands of tourists. You won’t find lots of big shops and restaurants here, nor big-name hotels. However, you will find locally owned shops and businesses. There are also many cabin Airbnbs, yurt vacation rentals, and other unique stays. In fact, you may find that you don’t even want to leave your cozy basecamp. Rather, you just want to enjoy the natural beauty, the sounds of nature, and the quiet time away from the monotony of life. This is the perfect place for this type of adventure.
Kila may not receive the love that other small towns receive, and locals may even be a bit upset that I’m sharing their secret. However, there is so much to love about this quiet small town in Montana that I couldn’t keep it to myself.
