The Most Criminally Overlooked City In Montana And Why You Need To Visit

Dillon, Montana is an underrated small town with rich history, great fishing, and excellent dining options.

The cities and towns in Southwest Montana are really something special. Surrounded by majestic mountains and lush green land, many of them look almost too postcard perfect to be real. But while some of the more populated places tend to attract the attention and tourism, the small city of Dillon remains a quiet and underrated treasure. But we’ll give you a few great reasons to visit.

Dillon is situated in a sweeping valley into which the Beaverhead, Big Hole and Ruby Rivers drain.

Needless to say, this is a popular area for fishing.

Bannack State Park, one of our state’s most well-preserved ghost towns, is located just southwest of town.

The buildings that line Dillon’s Main Street are an ode to the gold rush days.

In 1881 the Utah and Northern Railroad reached Dillon, and it became a point of distribution for supplies from Utah into the gold fields of Montana.

History buffs will love the Beaverhead County Museum, which preserves the local pieces of our past.

Tourists tend to be surprised by how much there is to see here.

If you visit Dillon, come hungry.

For a city of its size (around 4,300 people) there are a lot of great restaurant options here. Papa T’s (pictured here) and the Longhorn Ropers Saloon & Grill are a couple of local favorites.

There’s even an amazing 1950s garage-themed restaurant called Sparky’s Garage.

Don’t leave town without checking out The Bookstore at 26 N. Idaho Street.

They specialize in books about Montana and the western United States.

Have we convinced you to visit Dillon yet? We hope so. It’s one of several underrated places in the beautiful state of Montana.
