Bannack was founded in 1862 when John White discovered gold on Grasshopper Creek.

News traveled quickly, and many hopeful businessmen flocked there.

For a brief moment in time, Bannack was our territorial capital. That honor soon went to Virginia City.

From the late 1860s to the 1930s, Bannack continued as a mining town with a fluctuating population. But by the 1950s, the gold had dwindled, and the little city turned into a ghost town.

These days, you can visit the state park and check out the remaining 60 structures.
