1. A warm winter coat. And we mean warm.

2. A vehicle.
Public transportation exists, but it’s not fast or easy to navigate. Montana is huge. If you want to live here, you should have a car or truck.
3. The ability to drive in imperfect weather conditions.
4. A good attitude and a sense of humor.
Montanans are pretty friendly, but they don’t appreciate people moving from out of state and trying to change things or claiming that other places live better. Also, your old friends might give you a hard time for moving to God’s country, so be prepared to smile and take their jokes while secretly congratulating yourself for living in the best place on Earth.
5. Outdoor equipment.
Bring your hiking shoes, fishing gear, hunting rifle, your skis… if you’ve ever wanted to pursue an outdoor hobby, you’ll have plenty of opportunity in Montana.
6. Sunscreen and mosquito repellant.
Protect yourself on those outdoor adventures and your skin will thank you.
7. Good old-fashioned maps.
If you want to explore Big Sky Country, please note that you won’t get cell phone service in many areas. Certain carriers don’t even offer service here at all. Don’t rely on Google Maps or your phone’s GPS—pack actual maps.
8. A solid work ethic.
The economy in Montana isn’t terrible, but it can be tough to find a job in some rural areas. If you’re not moving for a specific job offer, have some money saved and be prepared to look around for work. It’s best to have a job lined up before you move if you can. But don’t be discouraged… there will always be room for hard workers.
9. A true, pure, undying love of Montana.
You won’t find more state pride anywhere else. If you want to make friends, you’re going to have to admit that the Treasure State is the best.
