Escape to These Charming Mountain Towns in Missouri Before Fall Ends
From Vegas-style shows to secluded spots in nature, these four charming mountain towns in Missouri are worth a visit this fall.
Covering the southern half of Missouri, the Ozark region is easily one of the most underrated destinations in the United States. With expansive green forests, towering bluffs, and picturesque rivers, the Ozarks offer a true escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. As fall begins to roll in, now is the perfect time to plan a trip to these charming mountain towns in Missouri before the leaves lose their luster.
1. Branson
Branson, Missouri, is probably one of the first towns that comes to mind when you think of the Ozarks. With its Vegas-like shows and attractions, it's a popular destination for families and couples alike. However, there is more to Branson than just its flashy entertainment.
One of the main draws of Branson is its access to nature. The town is just a 20-minute drive from Table Rock Lake. Here, visitors will find endless opportunities for swimming, boating, and fishing. Additionally, the Ruth and Paul Henning Conservation Area is a local favorite. This spot offers trails and an observation tower. You're also just a short drive away from the famous. Branson is also home to several theme parks, including Silver Dollar City.
2. Hollister
If you're looking to step back in time, the town of Hollister offers Historic Downing Street, which looks exactly like an old English village. Here, you can explore a handful of businesses that mimic the Tudor Revival style architecture. While it's a sleepy town, it offers a stillness from the busier nearby tourist towns. Stroll along the cobblestone streets, grab a bite at one of the cozy eateries, or peruse the quaint shops. Hollister's attention to detail makes it a hidden gem for those seeking a taste of Europe without leaving Missouri.
3. Rockaway Beach
Not to be confused with the famous Rockaway Beach in New York City, Rockaway Beach, Missouri, is a lakeside destination situated on the shores of Lake Taneycomo. Visitors can enjoy fishing, boating, or simply relaxing by the water's edge. The town also hosts seasonal events, live music, and small local festivals.
4. Springfield
While it’s about an hour's drive from the Ozarks, many folks still consider this up-and-coming city to be a part of the mountain town community in Missouri (or at least a gateway). Springfield, where actor Brad Pitt grew up, is filled with cultural attractions like the Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium and a massive Bass Pro Shop. Additionally, it's home to a great mural walk as well as a growing theater and culinary scene.
A particularly fun shop to check out is BookMarx. This used bookstore was home to a very friendly cat, who was voted Captain Springfield, and sadly passed in 2025. We're crossing our fingers for a new resident feline. Other great spots to explore include the Dutch-themed Van Gogh's Eeterie, Black Sheep Burgers and Shakes, and performancea at the Springfield Little Theatre.
From the charming streets of Branson to the up-and-coming scene in Springfield, each of these charming mountain towns offers its own distinct personality waiting to be explored. Feeling inspired? Try planning your own southern Missouri trip using Only In Your State’s itinerary planner.
