The Small Town in Missouri That Feels Straight Out of ‘Gilmore Girls’
Columbia, Missouri, transports you to the academic institutions of the East Coast alongside delicious eateries and endless corners to explore.
Walking around the small college town of Columbia, Missouri, I felt like I would hear the theme song of "Gilmore Girls" pop up at any second. While it’s hotly debated by locals whether the state is part of the Midwest or the South, the overall vibe of this university town feels like a slice of the Northeast. During my three-day trip to Columbia, I quickly came to understand what makes this community so special.
The focal point of Columbia is the University of Missouri. Affectionately known as Mizzou, the school has a deep connection with President Thomas Jefferson. Our third president acquired the land on which the University of Missouri was built during the Louisiana Purchase. As a result, you’ll find numerous memorials and artworks depicting the president.
Aside from that presidential connection, the campus is stunning. In full academic regalia, the columns of magnificent educational buildings make you feel as if you’ve stumbled on East Coast institutions like Harvard or Princeton. Be sure to visit both the Museum of Anthropology and the Museum of Art.
In addition to its collegiate prestige, Columbia is home to a delicious dining scene. What was most impressive to me about the community was just how good the food was. As a Chicagoan, I have high standards for pizza. Let me tell you, the pies from Shakespeare's Pizza were something to write home about. I’m also a real sucker for a good, greasy breakfast, and Ernie's Cafe and Steak House delivered. I enjoyed breakfast alone at this retro-themed establishment and immediately felt like a local, thanks to the kind and welcoming staff.
As with any good college town, the coffee shops were top-tier. I sipped my way through the community but found Shortwave Coffee to be my happy place, particularly for an iced latte. Lakota Coffee Company deserves an honorable mention. Sparky's Homemade Ice Cream is also worth checking out if you’re looking for an even sweeter treat.
There’s a lot to do in this eclectic community. In addition to exploring the university’s campus, I recommend taking a trip to the A-Frame. The A-Frame is a beautiful winery that overlooks the Missouri River. Alternatively, for those looking to stay active, spend the afternoon exploring Katy Trail State Park.
Keeping with the elevated "Gilmore Girl" East Coast vibes, voco the Tiger Hotel was a beautiful place to rest my head. The hotel’s mix of historic architecture with a luxury-boutique feel made a perfect home away from home. On one of my evenings in Columbia, there was an intense lightning storm, and it was beautiful to watch from my large windows in the sky.
Whether you're exploring Columbia, Missouri, on a college visit or simply passing through, there’s no shortage of unique experiences to try. Maybe you'll get a "Gilmore Girls" vibe, too!
