The Ross R. Barnett Reservoir is a massive, 33,000-acre lake that’s Mississippi’s largest drinking water resource and one of the most popular spots for outdoor fun. There are five campgrounds peppered around the lake as well as many boat launches, parks, and piers for fishing, boating, and swimming, and it also just happens to be nestled along the historic Natchez Trace, one of the most scenic drives in the country. There's a beautiful little spot to park and enjoy the views, so let's take a closer look at the Reservoir Overlook in Mississippi and what to expect along the drive.
The drive to the Reservoir Overlook is almost as pretty as the final destination.
Whether you're coming from the north or the south part of the Trace, you'll have picture-perfect views along the drive.
The lake has 105 miles of shoreline, and much of the drive along the western side of the lake features a beautiful view of the lake.
There are plenty of spots to pull off and explore, so give yourself the time to stop and stretch your legs.
If you're coming from the north, the Cypress Swamp has an enchanting boardwalk trail that will take you over the cypress tree-lined swamp.
It's a short and sweet hike that even the tiniest of travelers can enjoy, so bring the whole family.
If you're coming from the south, Old Trace Park has plenty of beautiful pathways around the reservoir, plus a dog park and a disc golf course, too.
There's also a trail that will take you from this park to the overlook if you'd rather do the final leg on foot!
Once you reach the overlook, you'll have a front-row seat to this massive waterway.
It's like Mississippi's own little Great Lake!
Bring some snacks, sit back, and enjoy the sunset.
For a longer road trip, consider taking the entire 444-mile road trip along the Trace! Here are some of our favorite hidden gems along the Natchez Trace.
