The One Field Trip In Mississippi Everyone Needs To Take Just For Fun

As an official NASA visitor center, Pearlington’s INFINITY Science Center offers an experience like no other, making it a must-do for both children and adults. The one-of-a-kind science museum provides guests with a "fun and fascinating learning experience," which includes a behind-the-scenes tour of Stennis Space Center, nature trails, tram tours, and more. Ready to travel to INFINITY and beyond? Take a closer look at this amazing Mississippi treasure below.

Please note, INFINITY Science Center is temporarily closed.

Encompassing 35,000 square feet, the state of the art facility features numerous exhibits that focus on space…but that’s not all.

There are also exhibits geared toward Earth science, engineering, technology, and innovative programming.

Open Monday through Saturday from 9 am - 4 pm (hours have been changed since the photo was taken), it’s the perfect place for a day trip - no matter your age.

The fun begins before you even walk through the door thanks to outdoor sites, like a colossal rocket engine, tsunami buoy, and Navy training boat.

Just inside the front entrance, you’ll find the Science Express Gallery.

Perfect for some hands-on fun, the area includes plenty of big blocks, encouraging creativity and innovation.

There’s also a conservatory filled with more than 200 species of carnivorous plants.

As you make your way through the museum, you’ll come to the Immersion Theater.

The theater includes "Science on a Sphere" - an amazing exhibit that allows you to explore the tracks of hurricanes, the surface of the sun or Mars, and more.

Please note, "Science on a Sphere" Immersive Theater is currently under construction and will reopen May 2017.

After spending some time in the Immersion Theater, you’ll definitely want to check out the Earth and Space Galleries.

Fun for all ages, these galleries include everything from Smithsonian-loaned artifacts to hands-on exhibits.

You’ll also find one of INFINITY’s most popular attractions, the OMEGA Flight Simulator.

The high-tech thrill ride harnesses the same technology used for training professional pilots.

On the second floor, you’ll find a life-sized mockup of the International Space Station's Destiny, which you can board and explore.

You can even catch a movie while you’re at INFINITY.

Throughout the day, the center’s domed theater features different films on everything from the history of space exploration to science fiction.

You can also grab a bite to eat at the on-site restaurant, INFINITY CaFe.

The café, which serves a variety of po’ boys, burgers, and sandwiches, is open Monday through Saturday, 11 am until 3 pm.

Visit on a beautiful day and you can take advantage of INFINITY’s outdoor amenities, which include the Butterfly Gardens and Biome Boardwalk.

As you follow the boardwalk over swamplands, you’ll learn about the area’s wildlife via the informative signage that lines the way.

Also part of the INFINITY Science Center, the Possum Walk Trail is a great way to enjoy nature all while learning about local history.

The trail can be traveled by foot Monday through Saturday between 8 am and 5 pm. Don’t want to walk it? No problem; INFINITY offers tram tours, which run Monday through Saturday every hour, on the hour, between 10 am and 2 pm.

The 100-mile trail extends from the science center to Logtown Cemetery, which is located near the Pearl River.

Infused with history, the scenic trail will guide you through the deserted communities of Possum Walk and Logtown. There are several markers along the way that tell the story of the two ghost towns. One of the most popular points of interest on the trail is Logtown Cemetery, which contains graves that date back to the 1850s.

The Logtown Scenic Byway can also be accessed from INFINITY.

Part of the Byways to Space program, this scenic byway will take you through acres of pine plantation, hardwood trees, and oak-covered roadways, passing historic settlement sites and waterways. The beautiful Logtown Cemetery is included on this route as well.

Get a behind-the-scenes look at "America’s largest rocket engine test facility" with a guided tour.

Lasting about 40 minutes, the tour will take you into the facility’s restricted areas.

You’ll learn about the site itself as well as the scientific work that is currently happening there. There is no additional charge for the tour, which departs at 11 am, 12 pm, 1 pm, 2 pm, and 3 pm. (Please note, any passenger 18 and over must present a valid form of ID.)
