12 Reasons No One In Their Right Mind Visits Mississippi In The Winter

Mississippi is not an ideal winter destination due to various reasons including lack of snow and challenging weather conditions.

For the most part, we Mississippians are happy to welcome visitors and let them see firsthand just how great the Magnolia State is. However, outsiders need to plan their visits accordingly – otherwise they’ll get the wrong impression of our wonderful state. One time of the year that should definitely be avoided is winter. Sure, we like to talk up our (mostly) "mild winters." And if by some chance it actually snows, we boast about how beautiful it is. But it’s all just a façade. In fact, winter is, in all honesty, a horrible time to visit Mississippi – and here are 12 reasons why.

1. It absolutely NEVER snows here.

Who even remembers the last time it snowed in the Magnolia State???

2. Even if it did snow, it wouldn’t be much to look at.

And this photo is all the proof you’ll need.

3. There’s nowhere to have any wintry fun.

Note: standard winter attire usually not required.

4. The temperature is oftentimes shocking.

5. Snow has a strange effect on residents.

For some reason, snow tends to bring out the inner child in all of us.

6. The roads are not only dangerous but absolutely dreadful.

This appalling roadway in Natchez is almost hard to look at.

7. Access to fresh seafood just isn’t the same in the winter.

Sure, you can get fresh seafood year round on the Gulf Coast, but the oysters get even better in the cold winter months when Mississippi’s oyster season is at its peak.

8. Exploring the state’s hiking trails in the winter just won’t be the same as a summer visit.

If hiking in mild temperatures with no humidity or mosquitoes sounds like your idea of a good time, then suit yourself and check out the trails in the winter. But don’t say we didn’t warn you.

9. It’s probably best to ignore all attractions, too.

Just look at how unrecognizable the Cypress Swamp on the Natchez Trace Parkway is!

10. Things tend to get a bit wild.

The state’s 4-legged residents seem to enjoy basking in the cooler weather.

11. Winter nights are practically unbearable.

Living with views like this isn’t for everyone.

12. Visitors would have to learn a whole new skill set.

Layering is basically the key to surviving winter in Mississippi.
