5 Easy Day Trips You Can Take From Rochester, Minnesota, My Favorite Included
Try these five easy day trips from Rochester, Minnesota. You're sure to love exploring this part of the state.
Rochester is the largest city in Minnesota outside the Twin Cities metro area, and it continues to grow rapidly. Of course, this means Med City has plenty to offer its residents, but it's nice to escape every now and then to enjoy this beautiful region of our state. Here's a handful of suggestions for day trips that you can take from Rochester that I'm sure you'll enjoy.
1. Drive the Historic Bluff Country National Scenic Byway
The Historic Bluff Country National Scenic Byway offers a choose-your-own-adventure type of day trip from Rochester. Pick it up less than 30 minutes from town, near Fountain, and you can decide where to go from there. Enjoy beautiful countryside and charming towns like Rushford and Lanesboro as you drive. Personally, I like to stop in at a couple of breweries or wineries when I head out on the byway, and you'll find several along its route.
2. Visit the Birthplace of Spam
One of Minnesota's most famous (or perhaps infamous) products is made in the city of Austin, just 45 minutes southwest of Rochester. Yes, I'm talking about Spam. This spiced meat product has been a staple in Hormel's product line for nearly a century, and it's a beloved household staple in many places (looking at you, Hawaii), if not necessarily in Minnesota. Nevertheless, a visit to the Spam Museum in Austin is great fun and a quirky way to spend an afternoon.
3. Spend a Day Along the River in Winona
The charming Mississippi River city of Winona is located about an hour east of Rochester, and it's a wonderful place for a day trip or even a weekend getaway (if you're so inclined). Arrive in the morning so you can grab one of Bloedow Bakery's beloved donuts. Then head over to Levee Park to stretch your legs and check out the mighty river. Set aside enough time to explore the surprising collection at the beautiful Minnesota Marine Art Museum. Hopefully, you'll work up enough of an appetite to have dinner at Nosh Scratch Kitchen, one of my favorite restaurants in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
4. Go Spelunking
Minnesota's Driftless Area, with its cave and sinkhole-riddled karst topography, is a spelunker's dream, and two of the state's best cave tours are located only 30 minutes from each other and less than an hour south of Med City. Start with Mystery Cave at Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park, which is Minnesota's longest known cave. In the afternoon, head over to the charming town of Harmony, where you'll find Niagara Cave, named for its stunning underground waterfall. On the way home, grab dinner at the Branding Iron, a classic Minnesota supper club in Preston.
5. Explore Whitewater State Park
One of my favorite state parks in the Land of 10,000 Lakes is less than half an hour outside of Rochester, which means you can get there fast and spend all day exploring. Whitewater State Park checks all the beauty boxes: dense forest laced with hiking trails, soaring bluffs, and a pristine rushing river that's loaded with trout. It's hard to decide where to start!
Whether you take one of these day trips or all five, I'm certain you'll enjoy exploring southeastern Minnesota. What are your favorite day-long getaways in this part of the state? We'd love to hear about them!
