Here are the wealthiest large towns and cities in the state according to the median income of residents, along with poverty levels and unemployment rates. To keep this list reflective of actual city-sized spots, only communities with more than 12,000 people were considered. Many of these places make great Massachusetts day trip destinations, too.
1. Newton
At the top of the list of expensive places to live in MA is Newton with a median income of $127,402. Newton has a population of 88,317. The unemployment rate is 4.4 percent and the poverty rate is also 4.4 percent.
2. Melrose
Melrose has a median income of $87,712. The town has a population of 27,787. The unemployment rate is 4.3 percent and the poverty rate is 3.8 percent.
3. Franklin Town
Franklin Town is located in Norfolk County and has a median income of $108,815. The town has a population of 32,873. The unemployment rate is 6.2 percent and the poverty rate is 4.2 percent. It’s home to the first library in the country.
4. Woburn
Woburn has a median income of $83,872. The town has a population of 39,220. The unemployment rate is 5.4 percent and the poverty rate is 7.2 percent.
5. Amesbury Town
Amesbury Town has a median income of $75,861. The town has a population of 17,082. The unemployment rate is 5.3 percent and the poverty rate is 5.6 percent.
6. Marlborough
