Tucked away near Boston, this stunning bridge hike will make you feel like you’re light years from the city.
Though it’s right in the middle of the suburb of Newton, Hemlock Gorge is beautifully isolated from the outside world.
Its crown jewel is Echo Bridge. This gorgeous keystone, arched bridge spans the Charles River.
To start your hike, park in the large parking lot and hop on the clearly marked trail.
The path is fairly short and will take you straight to the bridge.
If you fancy, you can then ascend the steps up to the top.
There’s a pedestrian path and railings right across the bridge, so you can climb up and admire the view without worrying about falling off.
And yes, that sound you hear is the thunder of a waterfall.
A former 19th-century mill used the power of the river, and you can still see the ruins of the old structure.
Down on the ground, you can walk the trail right to the water’s edge and toss pebbles into the flow.
Or head beneath the bridge to a special platform that will let you experience the bridge's unique echo phenomenon. Try it!
The Echo Bridge Park trail is not too rugged and won’t take all afternoon, so it’s perfect for anyone looking for a casual afternoon outdoors.
