The Remote Small Town in Maryland Locals Don’t Want You to Find
Tucked away between the Tussey and Warrior Mountains awaits Flintstone, Maryland, which is one of the most remote towns to visit.
When you think of remote places in Maryland, you'll likely picture the Eastern Shore. Of course, many towns are considered far-flung on this beautiful peninsula; however, the title of the most isolated town in Maryland goes to Flintstone. If you've never heard of it, you're not alone, but you'll find this rural destination tucked away between the Tussey and Warrior Mountains in Alleghany County. It boasts beautiful vistas as well as plenty of fun things to explore. Here's more on why the most remote small town in Maryland is the perfect place to escape it all, and an idyllic hidden gem.
Welcome to Flintstone! Situated just a mile from the Maryland-Pennsylvania border, this remote destination has lots to offer. The European settlement of Flintstone began in the late 1700s; however, Indigenous People had lived in the region for centuries before. Once the National Pike was constructed for westward expansion in the 1800s, the town grew and became a stopping point for travelers. Today, the road is a section of the longer National Historic Road, a scenic byway.
As you can see, Flintstone is visually stunning. For proof of this, look no further than Rocky Gap State Park, one of the most beautiful parks in the area. The park is a treasure trove of stunning mountain and water views. One popular hiking trail within the park is the Lake Habeeb Lakeside Loop, a 5.2-mile trek that will take you around Lake Habeeb. The 49,000-acre Green Ridge State Forest is another gorgeous spot to immerse yourself in nature, offering more than 50 miles of hiking trails.
When you're ready for a bite to eat, head to Puccini Restaurant in nearby Cumberland. This homey restaurant serves hearty Italian fare, and its pepperoni and sausage pizza, along with the crab dip, come highly recommended. They're the perfect menu items to order after a day of adventures.
So, the next time you're eager to explore some of the state's more remote destinations, you'll be glad you planned a trip to Flintstone. Another remote destination in Maryland to check out is Black Hill Regional Park, located in Boyds. It may be the serene nature escape you never knew you needed!
