With 2,800 Feet Of White Sandy Dunes, Drake’s Island Beach In Maine Is A Top Notch Day Trip

We all know that Maine has more coastline than California. It's one of our favorite state facts here at Only in Maine! With all those miles of rocky outcroppings and sandy beaches, it's not always easy to choose the one to visit. Add tourists to the mix during the summer and you've got a recipe for some serious indecision. If you're feeling that way right now, we have a beach you might want to prioritize. It's great year-round, so don't limit the bookmarking of this article for summer fun. Consider it a spot you can visit when you want to walk the coast on a balmy winter day, too!

The entirety of the Maine coast is gorgeous, but the coast of the southern part of the state offers wide sandy beaches perfect for enjoying the day outside.

One of our favorites is Drake's Island Beach, located in Wells.

The beach is 2,8000 feet, which means there's plenty of room to spread out.

There's also a rocky jetty, which is great for feeling like an adventurer! The walk out on the water via the rocks is both fun and beautiful.

We love spending the day enjoying the beach, but there's also plenty to enjoy throughout the year. Stick around after most people go home and you can enjoy quiet fishing.

Most of all we love how beautiful the area is. The beach features some of the most beautiful sandy dunes and natural areas in the state, making this a great beach to enjoy year-round with a nice, calming walk.

However you choose to enjoy, know that this is one of the most lovely beaches in the region and it's worth planning a whole day here.

Drake's Island Beach is open year-round, but lifeguards are only on-duty daily between the last week in June through Labor Day and on weekends from Memorial Day weekend to the last week of June and Labor Day through Indigenous Peoples Day. Parking is available in the lot from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., but as with most Maine beaches in the summer, it's best to arrive early. Residents with a sticker can park for free; all others will pay $4 per hour.
