The One Maine Town That’s So Perfectly New England

You've probably come to Maine for a lot of reasons. Chief among them are lobster, seafood, and...more lobster. The good news? You'll find a lot of that throughout the state! The better news? You'll also get a side order of some serious New England vibes when you find it. While there are a lot of places in Maine that feel as picturesque as a movie set, we may have found one of the best New England towns in Maine. Welcome to Wiscasset!

This wonderful town has recognized itself, officially, as the "prettiest village in Maine."

Overlooking the Sheepscot River, Wiscasset comes with the type of charm that can only be found in the quintessential small Maine town.

Specifically, a town with under 4,000 residents as of the last census.

A day trip during any time of year should start with a trip through downtown.

Main Street is exactly what you'd imagine in New England. Wonderful locally-owned shops line the street, which is also dotted with restaurants, coffee shops, and bars.

Main Street leads to the Sheepscot River and the view might just top all Main Street views in the state!

The next place you'll want to stop is Red's Eats.

Home to one of the best lobster spots in Maine, Red's Eats almost always has a line in the summer so be sure to stop in earlier in the day.

Line too long? Head to Sprague's Lobster at the end of Main Street for another incredible lobster roll.

Wiscasset is also home to views that scream New England.

Wiscasset is also home to some surprising attractions.

The town is also rumored to be the site of Marie Antoinette’s escape house before her execution during the French Revolution. Local ship captain, Stephen Clough, made his way to France to rescue his daughter who, coincidently, was in the same prison. Clough’s wife even prepared their home for the queen. Legend says she nearly escaped but refused to leave without her son. The house can be seen across the river at Castle Tucker.

Built in 1807, Castle Tucker is one of the oldest in Maine.

It now operates as a museum allowing visitors to see how the last Victorian residents would have lived their daily lives.

And, just across from Castle Tucker is said to be the location of Marie Antoinette’s escape house prior to her execution in France.

There's also a wonderful artist vibe found throughout the town.
