Despite rumors that Mr. Bunyan was born here, no one is entirely sure that Paul Bunyan has absolutely anything to do with Maine, let alone the city of Bangor. but we love this looming homage to the man himself nonetheless.

Gifted to the good people of Maine by a group of builders from NYC on the occasion of their 125th anniversary, the statue has been a prominent feature of Bass Park in Bangor since 1959.

Of course, there are statues of Paul Bunyan throughout the country. But this fiberglass covered version is so perfectly painted, so beautifully constructed that he is widely believed to be the most handsome of all the Bunyan statues.

And while it's virtually impossible to test unless you're willing to take a tape measure to them all, most people believe this to be the largest statue of him anywhere in the world.

Over the years he's played a role in a number of community events, dressing up in various things to promote groups in the area.

And of course, he might be most famous for his starring role in Stephen King's IT.
