Discover Maine’s Most Enchanting Christmastime Main Street
Christmas in Portland, Maine is a magical experience, complete with spectacular lights and festive displays everywhere you turn.
If there's a time of year to be in Maine, this is it! You could argue that summertime is the best. And, while we agree that it's pretty great to enjoy the sunshine here, we're partial to the cozy vibes and cheer that come with exploring the state during winter. There are lots of places to get into the holiday spirit this time of year. The small towns are some of the best. But, for a truly remarkable night out, you'll want to head to the city of Portland. The festivities are spectacular, and we think you'll agree that the wow factor here is unrivaled!

It might not be a small rural town, but Christmas in Portland, Maine is undeniably magical. There might not be an actual "Main Street," but stroll down Exchange or Congress Streets and you'll see why we love this place so much. In fact, we think you'll add it to your current Maine holiday traditions once you see how beautiful it is!
The season begins just after Thanksgiving when the Monument Square tree is lit up for all to see. The nearly 40-foot tree shines against the iconic backdrop of Monument Square and Our Lady of Victories Monument. Looking for a more creative, local spin on the holidays? Stroll down to the Old Port and see how many lobster trap trees you can spot.
But even before the big tree goes up, the lights across town begin to flicker on. Full trees are covered in multicolored, rich hues, making it feel as though you're walking through a Christmas Dr. Seuss world. This can be seen in just about all of the parks and squares throughout town, like Longfellow Square, which looks especially whimsical when covered in snow.
Those who live here are lucky to experience the town on any regular day. Just walking through on a typical evening feels festive! The shops along Exchange Street are special as well, each lit up with a lovely display. No matter what street you choose to explore, you can't go wrong. If you need to pop into a cafe and get a hot drink, we recommend Tandem Coffee and Bakery on Congress Street. Plus, they make a mean hot chocolate!

Come and experience the merriment in one of the most charming Christmas towns in Maine. And if you've ever wondered, "Does it snow in Portland, Maine on Christmas?" the answer is yes, depending on the year, of course! Hopefully, we will have a white Christmas this year.
