Most People Don’t Know About The History Of This Beautiful Maine Island

House Island in Maine offers a unique vacation experience with rich historical significance.

Maine has over 4,000 islands dotting its beautiful coastline. From the big ones to the ones that barely have room for someone to stand, each one has its own history. We love taking the ferry to Peaks Island, Vinalhaven, and Monhegan but there are some much smaller islands that offer a lot in the way of beauty and calm. House Island in Maine, located just off of the Portland coast, is a great example of Vacationland's island life. It's small, with just a few places for visitors to stay. But, it comes with a history that most people are not aware of.

House Island is said to get its name from the existence of an early European house on the island built by an English explorer. It's one of the most fascinating islands in Maine.

While most people know it as the island that's often for sale, it actually comes with some interesting history dating back to the Civil War.

Throughout its history, it's been an immigration stopping point, a fish processing station, and, most notably, a military fortress. This island alone holds plenty of Maine history.

Fort Scammell was built in 1808 as part of the national second system of fortifications. Its purpose was to defend Portland Harbor’s main shipping channel.

In 1813 it finally saw action when American soldiers shot at British privateers caught in the act of stealing a private sloop.

Later in the 1800s, two local families used the island for nearly 100 years to process the fish they'd caught in the nearby waters.

In 1905, it became known as the "Ellis Island of the North" when the US government purchased the island to be used as an immigration processing station.

Now, you may be wondering what House Island is like today.

Today, the island is a vacation destination with three different houses available for rent.

Each abode has charm and beauty and makes for a special trip on one of the most unique islands in Maine.

But, it's not cheap. One night in The Lodge will set you back quite a bit with its high nightly rate.

But on the upside, it's so huge you can come with 19 of your family and friends. Split the total between everyone and the price is a lot more manageable. PLUS you've got extra hands to help make the perfect seafood dinner! Additionally, there are two smaller accommodations on the island to choose from. You find out more and inquire about booking a stay on the House Island website.
