The One Enchanting Place In Maine That Must Go On Your Bucket List Immediately

You may be under the assumption that you have already been to the the most enchanting places in Maine. We understand; we thought that, too. That is, until we found THIS place. The truth is that most of the natural wonders in Maine qualify as enchanting. If you can see, hear and smell it's easy to become enamored of the beauty of our state. But, if you've made your way to the end of your must-do list in Maine, we have just one more thing to consider: Little Wilson Falls and Gorge in Elliotsville.

While not especially hard on the legs, reaching Little Wilson Falls is no easy task.

This trip to the falls, which is just west of Borestone Mountain in Elliotsville, requires some travel on the Appalachian Trail. But, the good news is that you'll be able to say you did it! Even if it was just for a mile or so.

Just east of Route 15 in Shirley, the Little Wilson Stream runs east towards Big Wilson Stream.

This stream abuts the portion of the Appalachian Trail you'll be on to reach the falls.

The hike towards the falls can be confusing, so stay on the path and you'll be more likely to find what many other hikers can't manage to track down.

When arriving at the parking area nearby (directions can be found below) you'll want to head to the western edge. Then, take the path towards the stream. As long as you're following the stream, you're bound to hit the falls!

The trail is marked by orange flags here and there, so keep an eye out. Walk along the side of the stream - sometimes heading uphill, sometimes twisting and turning.

You may feel like you're getting lost, but stay the course and keep the stream on your right!

Unless you really are getting lost - then maybe just turn back and head home.

The Appalachian Trail is incredibly beautiful in this area and if you're lucky you'll meet up with some fellow travelers.

This time of year, there may be lots of people making their final miles to Mt. Katahdin. Talk to them about their trip and you'll probably hear some pretty crazy tales.

Little Wilson Falls bumps along lots of rocks and mini falls as it makes its way along.

Eventually, you'll need to veer slightly off the trail.

Be careful doing this as becoming lost is very easy. But, keep your ears open until you hear the sounds of rushing water, which can only mean one thing. You're there!

Little Wilson Falls plunges about 40 feet down into a long, deep canyon.

And it's absolutely breakthaking.

While Little Wilson Falls is beautiful, some people prefer the other end of the stream.

Another set of falls - called Big Wilson Falls - is a great place to spend a warm day.

You can slide down the rocks, into one of the most lovely swimming holes in Maine.

Directions for accessing the falls area: Head to Monson on Route 15, then turn onto Elliotsville Road. You'll drive about 8 miles towards a bridge crossing the Big Wilson Stream. Don't take the bridge! Instead, go left onto the gravel road you'll see. This road will take you directly to camp sites on the Little Wilson Stream. From here, drive on a gravel road towards a wacky looking intersection (more of a Y) and head right onto another dirt road crossing the stream on a bridge. Continue for about a mile, veer left, then you've arrived at the Appalachian Trail!
