Dreaming of the Everglades? Discover This Louisiana Hidden Gem Instead

I am not a mind reader, but I know what you’re asking: what destination in Louisiana could possibly be a substitute for the mighty Everglades? And that would be a valid question. Let’s be honest, the Florida Everglades is the largest ecosystem of its kind in the entire world. And though it overshadows the wilderness areas in Louisiana by miles, there are several hidden gems here that feel the same. One of the best lookalikes that I can think of is the Atchafalaya Basin near Simmesport. The oasis is brimming with natural beauty, scenic waterways, hundreds of species of birds, and, of course, gators. So, if you can’t make it to the Sunshine State, plan a trip to this nature preserve in Louisiana instead. I promise it’s the perfect dupe for the Everglades.

The Atchafalaya Basin is about 110 miles west of New Orleans and only 30 miles outside of Baton Rouge, making it easily accessible. Since the sanctuary is a short drive away, it’s a wonderful destination for a day trip from either city. It’s no wonder that thousands of folks flock to this hidden gem every year. As one of the most popular natural wonders in Louisiana, there is so much to do and see, so you won’t be missing out on a thing when visiting here. 

At one million acres and spanning across several Parishes, this vast wetland is giving the Everglades a run for its money. In fact, it’s the largest river swamp in the United States. Sure, there are no vast mangrove forests, no American crocodile, no Florida Panther, and no mysterious Skunk Ape Man at the Atchafalaya Basin. However, it does have a large population of alligators, cypress tree forests dripping with Spanish moss, secluded bayou trails, and over 250 species of birds. 

Within the basin is Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge. The protected land features a network of trails that wind through remote wilderness with views of various waterways. The trails are the ideal way to spot the different wildlife that call this ecosystem home. Keep your eyes peeled for migratory birds, bald eagles, turtles, and wild boar. For a chance to see gators swimming or resting on the banks of the swampy wetlands, don’t skip the Indian Bayou Alligator Trail. Make sure to have your camera in hand, as you never know when you will spot one. Also, begin your hike at sunrise, and you’ll want to have your bug spray ready. The mosquitoes here can be a bit overwhelming in the later part of the day.  

Birdwatchers, you’re in for a treat; Atchafalaya Basin is your slice of heaven. Due to its location along the Mississippi Flyway zone, bird watching is a popular activity in the natural habitat. Be on the lookout for bald eagles, herons, Ibis, and wood ducks. I’d suggest that you have your binoculars and camera ready when exploring the area. It’s guaranteed that you’ll snap some cool pics for your collection.

Since the Mississippi and the Red River feed the basin, there are plenty of water activities here. Just like the Everglades, you can kayak, canoe, boat, or book a swamp tour along the waterways. Fishing is also a popular activity, and the wetlands are brimming with largemouth bass, crappies, bluegills, and catfish. Other activities include hunting, camping, and educational programs. Plus, the sunsets here are to die for. This is the kind of destination where time slows down and you can get lost for hours marveling at all the natural beauty.

Honestly, with its vast waterways, secluded wilderness, wildlife viewing, and gorgeous cypress forests, I can’t think of a better dupe for the Everglades. So, the next time you find yourself dreaming of the Florida wonder, hop in your car and soak up the beauty of this Louisiana hidden gem that’s right in your backyard.
