The Tiny Cajun Town in Louisiana That’s the Perfect Day Trip Destination

Arnaudville, a small town in Cajun Country, offers unique experiences including swamp tours, local festivals, and authentic Cajun cuisine.

Cajun Country is peppered with charming towns that are ideal for day trips, and Arnaudville is at the top of our list. This tiny town clocks in at less than a square mile, but don't let the size of the town deter you, this beautiful town has a lot to offer, and you'll want a full day to explore it all.

With a population that hovers around 1,000, it’s safe to say Arnaudville qualifies as a small town. It may be tiny, but it’s also incredibly unique. For starters, the town is in both St. Landry and St. Martin parishes, a claim few Louisiana towns can make.

The little town is nestled along the banks of both Bayou Teche and Bayou Fuselier. In fact, before it was renamed Arnaudville to honor the Arnaud family, the town was known as "La Jonction," which means "the junction." It's one of the oldest towns in Louisiana and a place where four out of ten still speak Cajun French at home. A place where time moves as slow as the bayou, where last names like Broussard and Guidry are as common as rice in gumbo.

Nature is a driving force in the tourism side of this part of the state. A swamp tour is an absolute must when you're in Cajun Country.

Cajun Customized Excursions is a great local tour company that'll give you a glimpse of the Atchafalaya. 2026 marks their 10th year in business, and they're one of the best in the biz. The tours typically last about two hours, and you'll have a front-row seat to the wildlife in these beautiful wetlands.

After your swamp tour, relax with a cold beer at Bayou Teche Brewery. The tap room and beer garden are the perfect place to relax after soaring through the swamps. They brew several different beers, and you can expect to find anywhere from 12-14 available both by the glass or six-pack to take home. Many of these beers are made to complement Cajun and Creole dishes, so grab some of your favorite beverages to bring home next time you make your favorite Louisiana dish.

The town plays host to several events throughout the year, so there’s always something fun to look forward to in Arnaudville. Bargain shoppers will have a blast shuffling through the 7-Mile Yard Sale, an annual event that takes place on the third Saturday in March. In April, come and celebrate one of Louisiana’s most famous dishes at the Étouffée Festival, where you can enjoy live music, a carnival, and some of the best Cajun food you’ve ever tasted.

Speaking of Cajun cuisine, a trip to Arnaudville isn't complete without a meal from The Little Big Cup. Nestled right on the banks of Bayou Fuselier, if the food doesn't win you over, the views sure will. The front of the restaurant looks rather unassuming, but the views of the bayou once you're inside will blow you away. Sit outside if you can!

The menu is full of authentic Cajun dishes like gumbo and BBQ shrimp, but you'll also find new takes on traditional flavors. This is one of the region's more popular restaurants, and reservations are required on weekends.

When it comes to places to stay, that's when Airbnb really comes in handy. This cabin in Arnaudville is in a central location to everything, and it's honestly just the perfect little spot to call home while you immerse yourself in Cajun culture.

Cajun Country, Louisiana, is full of outdoor adventures -- and this tiny town is just the beginning! Just outside of Arnaudville is Breaux Bridge, another charming town in Louisiana where you can immerse yourself in even more delicious food, hiking trails, swamp tours, and even a prehistoric park filled with larger-than-life replicas of your favorite dinosaurs.
