Over the past 20 years, several powerful hurricanes have devastated the town. About 90 percent of residents left after the storms, so today the population hovers around 200. Some folks might think it feels like a ghost town, but one thing about Cameron is that the people here are truly resilient. Even after the devastation, the community and surrounding towns in Cameron Parish have remained strong and continue to thrive. 

Don’t expect major hotels, fancy boutiques, or chain restaurants here. But what you’ll find are great camping spots, beachfront rentals, local food joints, and friendly folks. Not to mention its crowd-free beaches with sandy shores that stretch for miles. As one recent visitor puts it, “There are no hotels, so also no big crowds! Best Things to Do in This Quiet Beach Town

Obviously, the beach is the main attraction in Cameron, and you’ll have plenty to choose from. In fact, there are 26 miles of shoreline along this quiet section of the Gulf. Holly Beach is by far the most visited, but it remains under-the-radar for tourists. On warm days, you’ll find locals crabbing, fishing, and swimming here. Collecting seashells is also a fun activity as you stroll along the sandy shores. Don’t miss the sunsets either, they’re truly magical. Other nearby beaches include Rutherford, Mae’s, and Gulf Breeze Beach, just to name a few. 

Beyond the beach, you can hike the nearby trails at Sabine National Wildlife Refuge and spot migratory birds at the Peveto Woods Sanctuary. The trails are short and easy, with views of scenic waterways and lots of spots to sit and soak it all in. You can even pack a lunch and enjoy a quick snack, too. If you’re a nature lover or bird enthusiast, you’ll enjoy these outdoor havens. 

Most tourists discover this sleepy little town while traveling along the  Creole Nature Trail. The 180-mile All-American Road loops through coastal prairies and wetlands, and it’s a great way to see the wildlife, beaches, and towns in the area. Plus, you’ll get to ride the Cameron Ferry and spot dolphins and pelicans along the way. 

Another reason to visit Cameron? To see the Sabine Pass Lighthouse. This 75-foot historic relic is located where the Sabine River meets the Gulf of Mexico and was built in the 1850’s. Although you can’t enter the inside, it’s a cool historical landmark worth visiting. You’ll need to call the Cameron Parish Library Branch at Johnson Bayou a day in advance to schedule a visit.  

If you get hungry, stop by Anchors Up Grill for a kickin’ shrimp Po’Boy or fresh Gulf seafood from Lighthouse Bend. There are other mom-and-pop spots and food trucks, so be sure to support the local businesses when you visit.
