Here Are 15 Things You Better Have If You Want To Survive In Kentucky

Essential items for living comfortably and safely in Kentucky include candles, extra batteries, and duct tape.

Living in Kentucky can be both a pleasure and a challenge, depending on where you are and what you enjoy in life. The Bluegrass State has some of the most beautiful land in the US, and some of the most unpredictable weather. We are the recipients of four seasons, and they are not necessarily consistent in temperature. It may rain one day, be 75 the next, and then snow during the night. It's happened before.

That being said, it is always important to be prepared wherever you live. For residents of the Bluegrass State, here are 15 things that can greatly aid in our comfort and survival:

15. Candles

Our winter, spring, and summer storms play havoc on the power lines and candles burn longer than some flashlights. Not to mention, they make a great addition to a romantic dinner at home.

14. Extra Batteries, Matches or a Lighter

Trust me… you will thank me for this one day.

13. A Flashlight

Occasionally, a coon, possum, or deer gets into our things. When this happens, the porch light doesn't give them pause like the flashlight.

12. A Flare Gun

There are places to hunt and camp in Kentucky’s wilderness where cell phones just don't work.

11. A Cooler

Everyone needs somewhere to keep their beer or soda during a picnic, camping, or fishing trip.

10. A Gun

Whether you own it for protection, for hunting, or are a collector, a gun can be a smart thing to have.

9. Traditional Map of Kentucky

There are places where GPS just doesn't work.

8. Fishing Gear

The Bluegrass has some of the best fishing spots in the US for Catfish, Bass, Bluegill, Sunfish, and Crappie.

7. Rain Gear

The rain can fall in Kentucky during any season.

6. Seasonal Clothing

We have to be prepared for frigid temps, boiling heat, slightly nippish weather, and comfortable temperatures, regardless where we are in the state.

5. A Farm Hat

A straw hat These wonderful head covering alternatives to the Derby hat shield the tender scalps of older farmers.

4. A Derby Hat

Buy it, make it, borrow it, but have it on Kentucky Derby week.

3. Deep Woods Off

This is a necessity if you live anywhere near the woods or the water. Mosquitoes thrive in the spring and summer. Not to mention, deer ticks can be relentless for those who like the woods.

2. A Hammer

For the things duct tape will not fix.

1. Duct Tape

Duct tape ingenuity is a common skill in Kentucky, and it is a quick fix for almost anything.

Now some of these things may not seem like a necessity, but they ALL come in handy. It's highly unlikely that you will ever enter a Kentucky home that doesn't have at least 12 of the 15 belongings on this list. However, this list is only the tip of the ice berg, so feel free to share your personal "must have" stuff in the comments below.
