We've got several great larger cities in the Sunflower State, but the small towns in Kansas are what make our state truly great. There are some super-tiny towns scattered throughout the state that only have a population of a few hundred, but today we're featuring one that's a little bit larger. The city of Fort Scott, Kansas is right along the state line with Missouri, about 90 miles south of Kansas City. With a population of around 7,500, there are so many things to do in Fort Scott, KS, from historic architecture to charming boutique shops to delicious restaurants and beautiful natural surroundings. Fort Scott was built around the military fort that shares its name. Today, Fort Scott National Historic Site is a great spot to learn about the history of the area.
The fort was established by the Army in 1842, but the military left the area in 1853. It was settled as a town a few years later, in 1857.
Walking through the downtown area's several blocks will show you a variety of interesting old architecture that feels like a step back in time.
Looking to enjoy some time outdoors? Fort Scott's Gunn Park spans 150 acres. There's a lot to do in the park, with miles of trails, campsites, and a disc golf course.
Rock Creek Lake is a 50-acre lake in Fort Scott that has several waterfalls and is popular with fishermen.
There are a variety of great locally-owned shops in Fort Scott. The Iron Star specializes in home decor and antiques and is a great place to browse.
