The Scenic Drive In Kansas That Runs Straight Through The Charming Small Town Of Matfield Green

If you've spent much time traveling through the Sunflower State, you're likely aware that we have a number of great scenic drives in Kansas. Whether you're headed down the lonely highways of our endless prairies or you're checking out the rolling Flint Hills, there are countless windshield views throughout the state that will surround you with beauty. One of the prettiest is the Flint Hills Scenic Byway, which runs through the eastern part of the state and passes through several great towns, one of which is the teensy-tiny Matfield Green, Kansas. Check it out:

Kansas is often thought of as flatter than a pancake, and, in truth, we are quite flat, but this region of the state does have gently rolling hills.

The scenery here is magnificent, with open land as far as the eye can see for miles at a time.

There's something downright intoxicating about driving through land like this. It almost makes you feel like you're the first person to ever visit the area!

The Scenic Byway portion of the road runs for about 47 miles and passes through intact tallgrass prairie, plus several small towns.

One blink-and-you'll-miss-it town along the route is Matfield Green.

The town's population tends to hover right around 50, so this is the very definition of a quiet small town. It's the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

It's a charming little community that's home to Pioneer Bluffs, a historic ranch that was originally settled in 1859.

It's now both a wedding venue and a museum celebrating the area's ranching heritage. You can learn more from the Pioneer Bluffs website.

The Works (formerly known as The Bank Art Space) is a community center in Matfield Green that serves as something of a welcome center as well as an art gallery and event space.

The small towns in Kansas are what really hold our state together, and Matfield Green may be teeny-tiny, but it's still one of our favorites!
