The Small Town Lake In Kansas That’s An Idyllic Summer Day Trip

There are plenty of places for summer day trips in Kansas - we've got more than 82,000 square miles at our disposal to explore! When I'm traveling during the hottest months of the year, I love to be near a body of water. Even if you don't plan on actually hopping in for a swim, just being near a lake or river can make you feel a few degrees cooler, and we're lucky enough to have lots of great lakes in Kansas that are perfect for a few hours out in nature on a hot day. One unassuming city out in western Kansas has a population of just under 850 but is ideally placed for a day of fun in the sun. Jetmore, Kansas is home to both Horsethief Reservoir and Jetmore City Lake, giving you multiple options for time out on (or in) the water.

Western Kansas doesn't get the respect it deserves. Sure, there's a lot of farmland out here, but some of the most magnificent Sunflower State scenery is out this way.

Jetmore is the county seat of Hodgeman County and has a history dating back to 1879.

It's a great little Kansas town and a perfect destination for those looking for a fun summer day trip.

You'll find the Jetmore City Lake just a few miles outside of town.

This 106-acre lake is stocked with bass and catfish. It's a great place to cast a line, camp, or just enjoy a day near the water.

If you'd like something a little larger, Jetmore is also home to the mighty Horsethief Reservoir. This man-made lake spans 450 acres.

The area around the park has endless opportunities for fun, with cabins, campsites, basketball courts, a playground, and a Frisbee golf course.
