If you ask us, Kansas City, Kansas is a bit underrated. It may be the third most-populated city in Kansas, but it doesn't get nearly as much attention as the larger city that shares its name and is located just across the Missouri state line. KCMO is actually the older of the two cities and got its name before Kansas was even a state. KCK was named after the Missouri city, and while it has a fraction of the population size of its larger "relative," it has plenty of history, natural beauty, and attractions to draw people to the region. Here are a few of our favorite things to do in KCK, without crossing the state line:
1. Great Wolf Lodge Water Park: 10401 Cabela Dr, Kansas City, KS 66111
Great Wolf Lodge is perhaps the most unique hotel in KCK. There are plenty of things to do here, like mini golf and restaurants, but the most popular attraction is the 38,000-square foot indoor water park.
2. Rosedale Mural Project: W 42nd Ave, Kansas City, KS 66103
Just walking through Kansas City, Kansas is a treat. The Rosedale neighborhood near 42nd Avenue is all decked out with a variety of murals by local artists.
3. Grinter Place State Historic Site: 1420 S 78 St, Kansas City, KS 66111
There's also lots of history to be found in Kansas City. The Grinter Place State Historical Site provides a fascinating look back in time to life for early settlers in the area. The home was built in 1857 and is remarkably well-preserved.
4. Fritz's: 250 N 18 St, Kansas City, KS 66102
Feeling peckish? There are lots of places to eat all over KCK. We're particularly fond of Fritz's Railroad Restaurant, a delightful eatery where your food is served up by a miniature train!
5. Kansas Speedway: 400 Speedway Blvd, Kansas City, KS 66111
If you feel a need for speed, check out the Kansas Speedway. This NASCAR track hosts two race weekends throughout the year. Even if you're not a particular fan of racing, it's an interesting family outing to go to at least once, just for the experience.
6. Strawberry Hill Museum and Center: 720 N 4th St, Kansas City, KS 66101
The Strawberry Hill Museum provides another look back into the past. This Victorian era home is decked out splendidly for the holidays each year, but it's a wonderful weekend trip in any season.
7. Rowe Ridge Vineyard and Winery: 11255 Leavenworth Rd, Kansas City, KS 66109
KCK may be a big city, but that doesn't mean you can't get a taste of farm life (and some delicious wine). Enjoy a trip to a winery with a visit to Rowe Ridge Vineyard and Winery.
Kansas City, Kansas may not have as big of a population as KCMO, but that doesn't mean it's not a great place to visit with plenty of things to entertain the whole family.
