A Drive Down Iowa’s Loneliest Road Will Take You Miles And Miles Away From It All
Amid the hustle and bustle of summer, it can be tempting to get away from it all. If you don't want to commit to an extended camping trip, why not go for a peaceful drive along the Iowa backroads? Iowa has many crowded highways, but Iowa Highway 4 is a different breed. Along the way, you'll encounter beautiful small towns, but you'll rarely see any other cars on this quiet road. It's often called Iowa's loneliest road - in the best way possible. As you cruise down the road, you'll be able to appreciate the Hawkeye State like never before.
Your journey begins in beautiful Estherville - a small but culture-filled town in northern Iowa.
As you approach Graettinger, a small farming community, take in the beautiful sights of the Iowa countryside.
Make sure to stop in at Kirby's Cafe for some hand-formed burgers - you'll need the fuel for the drive ahead.
As you drive through Pocahontas County, keep an eye out for the Rialto movie theater - it looks like a throwback, but it's still operating!
As you take the big bend to the second part of the drive, it's a beautiful mix between housing and nature. This is an especially great drive to take during the fall.
You'll see some amazing architectural sites along the way, like the Greene County Courthouse in Jefferson.
The road ends at Panora, another quiet town of just over a thousand.
It's also home to a charming cafe that's the perfect place to celebrate the end of your trip.
