Just off of Highway 163, about an hour southeast of Des Moines, is the charming Dutch-inspired town of Pella, Iowa. A little over 10,000 people call this gorgeous town home, and for good reason! This fascinating town offers visitors a taste of Holland. Windmills, Dutch letters, a "Tulip Time" festival each spring, and a real canal are just a few of the fairytale-like elements of this amazing Iowa small town.
Colorful, friendly, and full of sights, this must-visit town offers a "touch of Holland" right here in IA.
Pella is most often known for its annual Tulip Time celebration. Every year around May, the entire town is covered in these cheerful spring flowers.
Pella's tulip festival also includes a world-renowned parade. To prepare, the city plants over 200,000 tulip bulbs for the celebration.
You'll find the highest concentration of tulips near the town square; 130,000 to be exact.
Take photos, but don't take a bouquet home!
Rumor has it that each picked tulip carries with it a hefty fine.
But as much as we love it, don't think for one moment that Tulip Time is the only reason to visit this sweet town! There are countless things to do in Pella, and so many places to see that this "piece of Holland" might just become your new favorite place to visit every weekend.
Vermeer Mill is a working windmill. It's the tallest working mill in the United States.
This 1850s-style "koren mill" or grain mill was actually first assembled in Holland - so this is authentic European magic right here! It stands at 124 feet tall.
The Klokkenspel is a 147-bell carillon that puts on a daily show, keeping time and playing music multiple times every day, year-round.
You'll find the historic Klokkenspel just a half of a block east of the town square on Franklin Street.
Quaint shops, bakeries, and historic buildings abound, boasting charm around every corner. And you'll definitely find some of the best pastries in Iowa here!
If you love architecture, you'll find yourself blown away by everything this slice of Iowa has to offer.
But even the residential areas are just as quaint!
Spring, Fall, Winter - there's no bad time to visit.
Every street is straight out of a postcard scene!
Even the mundane details are full of delightful Dutch touches.
And the natural beauty... *chef's kiss!*
From stunning hikes to family strolls to waterfront beauty, you'll find a little bit of everything here!
