About 10 miles east of the state line between Indiana and Illinois is the city of Terre Haute, a tragically underrated city. While most of the attention focuses on big cities like Indianapolis (not that there's anything wrong with that), smaller cities like Terre Haute often go unnoticed, and I think that's a crime. Terre Haute was originally platted in 1816, and its growth was exponential thereafter. The population climbed rapidly, and by 1818, the town was made the official county seat of the newly minted Vigo County. From there, the growth only continued. Today, Terre Haute is a city in Indiana with a population of just over 58,000 people as of the 2020 census. It's got all the cuteness of a small town with all the resources of a big city, and it's way underrated if you ask me.

The name "Terre Haute" is a French phrase meaning "highland," and it makes sense: the city is built on a knoll overlooking the Wabash River. Once upon a time, it was a bastion of trade and commerce, and today, it isn't much different, though it's more charming now than ever.

There is plenty to do in Terre Haute, and it's almost impossible to mention everything in one short article. Some of the must-do attractions in Terre Haute include gems like Deming Park, which is well-known for its beauty, and Fowler Park, known for its spectacular swimming hole.
