8 Things That Belong On Everyone’s Illinois Summer Bucket List

We are inching closer and closer to the fall, but there is still time to soak up the last precious moments of the summer. In anticipation of the colder months ahead, now is the time to make some plans and get outside. If you are grasping at straws for something to do before the school year ramps up and the temperatures drop, we’ve put together a summer bucket list of must-do activities to jump on ASAP!

1. Swim in Lake Michigan

As Illinois has shoreline along a Great Lake, finding a beach and going for a swim is a must. Lake Michigan is notoriously cold, so this is the perfect activity on days when the heat index is high.

2. Find a niche museum

Summer is the perfect time to go on an adventure and learn about something you might not have otherwise. If you are interested in local history, the Perry County Jail Museum might be worth a visit. If you have a sweet tooth like I do, The Heath Museum and Confectionery in Robinson, Illinois could be a great place to spend an afternoon.

3. Visit a botanical garden

Summertime is the ideal time of year to visit the many botanical gardens and arboretums around the state. The Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden in Rockford comes to life with an array of colorful flowers every spring and summer. As a bonus, this spot also has a splash park for young children wanted to cool off between garden walks.

4. Have a Chicago dog at Wrigley Field

A quintessential summer activity is heading to the second oldest MLB ballpark in the U.S. Ordering a Chicago hot dog and sitting under the sun at Wrigley Field is an experience no other state can compete with. Just be sure to watch out for overly rowdy Cubs fans!

5. Enjoy some barbecue

I don't know about you, but nothing screams summertime as much as barbecue. While it's one thing to load up the grill in your backyard, making a pilgrimage to a BBQ spot always pays off. Pauly’s BBQ in Arthur, Illinois is a great spot to order a fulfilling lunch with a glass of sweet tea to get a taste of all things summer.

6. Take a bike ride

Soon enough the roads will once again be covered in ice and salt, but for now we can enjoy clear paths ideal for riding a bike. The I&M Canal State Trail runs from the Chicago suburbs down through central Illinois. Biking along this trail offers great views of the Illinois River while crossing over bridges and aqueducts.

7. Find a small town ice cream shop

Everyone has a go-to ice cream spot in their neighborhood. Before they all close for the season, pick a neighborhood you've never been to before and find their local ice cream shop. My suggestions are Paxton's Corner Coop in Annawan, Toots Treats in Elmwood or Sling 'N Scoops in Red Bud.

8. Ride on a stretch of Route 66

Route 66 has been the site of many iconic memories for visitors to Illinois. When you commute on it everyday, however, it might lose some of its luster. Take some time this summer to rediscover the joy of riding with your windows down and music cranked up high on Route 66.

Time will fly by this summer, so make the most of it by getting outside and engaging with some of the natural spaces, cultural centers and small businesses that make Illinois so enjoyable this time of year.
