The charming and historical town of Galena is always a worthwhile place to visit. Its bustling downtown area offers so much to see and do. Regardless of your interests, this one-of-a-kind spot undoubtedly deserves a place on your travel bucket list.
Home to one of the country's best Main Streets, Galena is a paradise for both foodies and shoppers, as well as history buffs. There are more than 125 shops and restaurants for visitors to explore in town and most are housed in historic buildings, which give off an air of old-fashioned charm. You'll feel like you've taken a pleasant step back in time when you visit.
One of the most historic buildings in town is the Dowling House. As the oldest house in Galena, it was established in 1826 and first served as the area's only trading post as well as a residence. Visitors can take a guided tour of the house between the months of May and November. We weren't kidding when we said there was something here for everyone to adore.
If you're looking to explore Galena over a weekend, consider staying at one of the downtown hotels or inns. That way, you will be within walking distance of all that the town has to offer.
One place you might consider staying is the historic DeSoto House Hotel which was built over 175 years ago in the heart of downtown. It provides comfortable accommodations, wonderful amenities, and excellent service. What more could you ask for?
Locally-owned boutiques and shops can be found along Main Street. Whether you're in the market for new clothes, home decor, handmade items made by local artists and artisans, or antiques and vintage goods, you can certainly shop till you drop in Galena!
Not only is Galena a town for shoppers, but it also provides plenty of fodder for foodies. Here you will find a wide array of restaurants offering international, farm-to-table, and American cuisine as well as bakeries that offer freshly baked goods and coffee. Delicious!

If you imbibe, there are also a number of bars as well as a distillery and a brewery in town. Located on Main Street, the Galena Brewing Company offers 13 beers on tap, food, and tours on Fridays and Saturdays. Visit the Galena Brewing website for days and hours of operation.
If outdoor exploration is more your vibe, you'll also find plenty of natural beauty here. Just across the Galena River from downtown is the lovely Grant Park, which can be accessed via a pedestrian bridge. From here, you can take in the views of the town, go for a stroll, have a picnic, and view several historic cannons and monuments.
