Escape to These Charming Mountain Towns in Idaho Before Fall Ends

Full of natural beauty, outdoor activities, and fall foliage, a visit to these charming mountain towns must be on your autumn bucket list.

Having lived in several states throughout my life, I can say with certainty that I never want to leave Idaho. I have called the Gem State home for more than a decade, and have visited what I believe are the most beautiful places in the state, including its stunning mountain towns. In fact, there are several mountain towns that have captured my heart and particularly shine during the autumn months when the weather cools down, the crowds thin, and the fall foliage reaches its peak. The following are just seven of the charming mountain towns in Idaho I recommend you escape to this autumn—each one is truly breathtaking.

1. Wallace

Just a few weeks ago, I drove through the small, yet gorgeous town of Wallace. Each time I visit, I marvel at this area's beauty. This small town of less than 1,000 people sits right along the South Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River and is surrounded by mountains and forests that are covered in gold, red, and orange hues in the autumn months. This town is a place full of history and a few unique destinations (Center of the Universe, anyone?), and is known as an outdoor paradise with its incredible trails and parks. If you visit in the early fall, consider tackling the nearby Route of the Hiawatha. This 15-mile bike trail features some of the most extraordinary forest views.

2. Ketchum

Ketchum, Hailey, and Sun Valley are some of my favorite places to visit when fall foliage is at its peak. Ketchum, in particular, is the perfect place to set up base camp for an autumn escape as you can enjoy small-town charm, gorgeous views, and much smaller crowds than you’d see in the summer or winter season. For the most breathtaking fall foliage views, put on your best boots and hike to the scenic overlook via the Bald Mountain Trail. This 3.5-mile trail takes you above Ketchum and provides inspiring city views, especially when dressed in autumn's colors. Of course, book a stay at the Sun Valley Lodge for even more fall foliage views and cozy, historic accommodations.

3. Island Park

My grandparents lived in Island Park, and I grew up visiting this mountain town countless times every year. Now, my parents live here, and there’s nothing quite as magical as sitting on the deck of their cabin, admiring fall foliage views, and even spotting wildlife (like the resident fox) in the trees. Island Park is extremely busy during the summer months, but come fall, it seems to slow down, the colors are on full display, and the cooler temperatures make it easy to spend time outdoors. Simply drive along Highway 20 for gorgeous scenery, or head into either Harriman State Park or Henry’s Lake State Park for a day trip. If you are like me, you may just want to stay snuggled in a cabin, taking the time to unwind before the holiday season arrives. No matter what you choose, you can’t go wrong.

4. Stanley

I’m pretty sure that no list of the best mountain towns in Idaho is complete without mention of Stanley. This small town is tucked away from the state’s big cities, making it a quiet retreat with some of the best mountain scenery. Stanley is extremely small and in the fall, the town starts to shut down, but the list of activities in the area is endless, such as taking a drive along the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway, admiring the colors surrounding Redfish Lake, hiking one of the many trails in the Sawtooth Mountains, and even soaking in a nearby hot spring like Boat Box Hot Spring or Sunbeam Hot Springs.

5. McCall

McCall is another Idaho town that tends to come alive in the summer and winter months, but I particularly love this area in the fall. Not only does the town feel less crowded and accommodations are easier to book, but there are countless activities for your bucket list. For a leisurely afternoon, walk through town and admire the pops of color along the streets and the landscape around the lake. For a full-day adventure, head into Ponderosa State Park for hiking and mountain biking opportunities. Make sure you also visit Brundage Mountain Resort for a scenic chairlift ride when the fall colors are at their peak. This is one stunning view you won’t receive just anywhere.

6. Bonners Ferry

Located at the top of the state is the charming town of Bonners Ferry. It is not only known for being the most friendly town in Idaho, but it’s a gorgeous community as it sits right along the Kootenai River. This is another destination where the fall views are exquisite right in town, but we recommend you also spend time at the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge, driving the International Selkirk Loop, or hiking one of the area's many trails. For example, the Myrtle Falls Trail is considered one of the best hiking trails near Bonners Ferry to view fall foliage.

7. Riggins

Riggins is a small town in Idaho that I believe doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Located in a canyon, right at the confluence of the Salmon and Little Salmon Rivers, this town of less than 500 people is unforgettable. In the summer months, Riggins is quite busy with thrill seekers who are ready for a whitewater rafting adventure. In the fall, the area is much more peaceful with activities like fishing and relaxing at Riggins Hot Springs. One of the best places to view fall foliage near Riggins is Hells Canyon Wilderness, and here you’ll find several hikes and viewpoints that will inspire.

I love the fall months. I find this is the perfect time to slow down, unwind, and enjoy the natural beauty of Idaho. And, there’s no place quite like a charming mountain town in Idaho to fall in love with autumn’s beauty. The question is … which town is on your fall bucket list this year?
