The Spontaneous Road Trip Through Idaho That Is the Perfect Weekend of Adventure

Some of my favorite trips are those that are spontaneous and last-minute. They don’t involve months of planning and are perfect for some time away from home. That’s why I have created this spontaneous Idaho weekend road trip. Taking you to seven destinations in the state, this road trip itinerary is perfect for friends, a solo adventure, and especially for a weekend with the family. You’ll see some of my favorite spots in this area of the state, and even better, you can see it all in just two days.

What to Know Before You Go on This Idaho Road Trip

This road trip itinerary is a loop, making it easy to start wherever is most convenient for you. However, for the purpose of this article, we are going to start in Boise and travel counterclockwise. You will travel just under 400 miles, and this trip requires approximately 8 hours of drive time. However, you’ll still have plenty of time to stop and enjoy yourself along the way. So, grab some car-friendly snacks, put on a good playlist, and let’s explore!

Stop One: Kathryn Albertson Park in Boise

The first stop on our road trip is the beautiful 41-acre Kathryn Albertson Park in downtown Boise. This park allows you to immerse yourself in Mother Nature’s creations without traveling far outside of the city. Here, you can take walks along the paved footpaths, sit in the outdoor gazebos, and observe wildlife of all shapes and sizes.

Stop Two: Three Island Crossing State Park

Three Island Crossing State Park may not be one of the most popular state parks in Idaho, but it’s certainly worth a visit. This destination is packed with history and is the site of one of the most dangerous river crossings along the Oregon Trail. You can view original wagon ruts and exact replicas of the pioneer wagons. Give yourself plenty of time to walk around the Oregon Trail History and Education Center. You may even want to play a game of disc golf before you continue on your way. This is a great place to stretch your legs on this scenic Idaho road trip.

Stop Three: Shoshone Falls in Twin Falls

You can’t pass through Twin Falls without stopping at the impressive Shoshone Falls. This mesmerizing waterfall is known as the "Niagara of the West," and when you visit, you’ll immediately see why. There are numerous viewpoints to admire the falls, or if you want a heart-racing adventure and are willing to make your road trip a little longer, consider paddling out to the falls from Centennial Waterfront Park.

Stop Four: Sawtooth Botanical Garden

Sawtooth Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in Ketchum. This destination is open daily from dawn to dusk and is where you can walk through gardens that represent five major biomes. And while the entire area is absolutely beautiful, it’s also educational. If you plan your visit just right, you may be able to participate in one of the many events at the garden.

Stop Five: Sun Valley Resort

The next stop on our road trip is the Sun Valley Resort. This is one of my favorite road trip stops in Idaho, and I strongly recommend that you get out of the car and stretch your legs as you dine in the Sun Valley Lodge or shop and explore the Sun Valley Village. I love walking the halls of the Sun Valley Lodge and looking at the photos that line the hallway of celebrities who have visited in years past. You never know who you may see.

Stop Six: Redfish Lake

I will never drive past Redfish Lake without spending some time next to its shore. Redfish Lake is one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in Idaho and is the largest lake within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Swim, fish, or paddle on the water, or just sit on the sandy beach and admire the views. You can also dine or stay overnight at the Redfish Lake Lodge if you are looking to spend a bit longer in this stunning area.

Stop Seven: Trudy’s Kitchen in Idaho City

The last stop on our road trip is Trudy’s Kitchen in Idaho City. This restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but the real stars of the show are the desserts. Trudy’s Kitchen is known for its pie, and each slice is so large that you’ll definitely want to share. The pies are homemade, and some of the cream pies rise three to six inches above the crust. It is truly an impressive and delicious treat—the perfect way to end our Idaho weekend road trip.
