Ketchum is located in central Idaho and is best-known for its proximity to Sun Valley Ski Resort. This small town has just under 3,000 residents and the most magnificent mountain scenery.
This small mountain town has quite a history. It is believed that people lived in the area more than 10,000 years ago.
In the 1870s, the town began to flourish due to the discovery of gold. Many individuals flocked to the Ketchum and Sun Valley area to strike it rich. By the 1880s, this mountain area became a well-populated mining town.
Years later, in 1936, Count Felix Schaffgosch arrived in the area. He was searching for the best place to build a ski resort. Within three days of visiting the area, he knew the Ketchum/Sun Valley area was the place.
Today, fall is one of the best times to visit the Ketchum and Sun Valley area. During this time of year, you miss the busy winter skiers and the summer mountain bikers, giving you a more quiet, enjoyable experience. Plus, the fall foliage is absolutely breathtaking.
If the weather allows, spend your day exploring just a small portion of the Sawtooth Wilderness Area. This is 217,000 acres of land with more than 300 lakes and 40 lakes.
Once you get hungry, stop by the Pioneer Saloon, one of the best steakhouses in the area. This western-themed restaurant will satisfy your cravings and you definitely need to try the prime rib — it’s massive!

Ketchum is also known by the International Dark-Sky Association as a Dark Sky Community. During your visit, make sure to stay up late and look at the night sky. It is simply magical.
