Hawaii Has 3 of the Nation’s 10 Cheapest Airports

If you live in Hawaii and fly to the mainland regularly, you already know the drill. According to recently released figures from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics analyzed by Only In Your State, three Hawaiian airports rank among the top 10 most affordable in the country for departing domestic flights.

Lihue Airport (LIH) on Kauai ranked third nationally in 2025, with an average domestic fare of $283.60—more than $100 below the national average of $387. Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) on the Big Island ranked seventh at $297.60, and Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui ranked eighth at $307.98. All three sit comfortably below the national average, making them some of the best-value departure points in the country.

The Neighbor Island Advantage

What makes these rankings especially striking is that all three of Hawaii's top performers are on neighbor islands—not Oahu, the state's most populous and most visited. Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island are each served by airports that attract strong competition among carriers chasing leisure travelers, and that competition tends to work in passengers' favor at the ticket counter.

For Hawaii residents on the neighbor islands especially, these numbers reflect a real advantage. Flying out of Lihue, Kona, or Kahului puts you among the most affordable departure points in the nation.

What About Honolulu?

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) tells a different story. As Hawaii's main hub and the 32nd busiest airport in the country by passenger volume, Honolulu averaged $389.54$ per ticket in 2025—right in line with the national average of $387. It's not expensive by any means, but it doesn't carry the same deep-discount edge as the neighbor island airports.

While the savings on neighbor island departures are significant for local residents on Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii Island, Oahu travelers shouldn't hurry to book inter-island connections just to chase a lower fare. Once you factor in inter-island tickets, baggage fees, and layovers, flying directly out of Honolulu remains the most practical and cost-effective route for Oahu residents.

For travelers flying out of Oahu, fares are competitive but unremarkable compared to what's available on the other islands. If your trip allows for flexibility on which island you depart from, the data makes a strong case for the neighbor islands.
