Darien Is One Of The Most Underrated Summer Destinations In Georgia

The Peach State is really big, so it goes without saying we have a number of great places to visit, especially in the warmer months. If you're looking for great summer trips in Georgia, your problem will likely be choosing which place to visit! One of our favorite summer destinations is the little coastal town of Darien. It may not get quite as much publicity as nearby Brunswick and Savannah, but it's a delightful little place rich in natural beauty and fascinating history.

Darien has some of the prettiest views in Georgia, especially if you are visiting in summertime! The waterfront vistas are incredible.

It's the oldest planned city in Georgia and has a population of just under 2,000.

The Butler Island Plantation was once a thriving rice farm. The grounds are now open for hiking. There are historical markers throughout the property, and you'll see a variety of old buildings.

Another spot history lovers won't want to miss is Fort King George. This is the oldest standing English fort in the whole country, and was at one time the southernmost point of the British Empire in the Americas.

The Ashantilly Center is a fascinating museum that hosts events throughout the year and is open for tours by appointment. There's an old printing press and the home itself is a lovely piece of history.

Looking for beauty of the natural variety? Darien's got plenty of that, too! Travel by boat to nearby Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge. This 5,618-acre preserve is a stunning oasis.

Bring your own boat or access the island via local charter service - there's no bridge to Blackbeard Island, so you can only reach it by water!
