Ever just get the urge to go on a spontaneous road trip? We're lucky enough to have a number of great road trip destinations in Connecticut, but admittedly, the spontaneity involved in a spur-of-the-moment trip often necessitates that it's a short trip of just a couple of days. No sweat, though: one of the main benefits to living in such a small state is that you can get to so many places in a relatively quick amount of time! We've gathered up a few must-visit locations that are perfect for a quick weekend road trip from Stamford to Mystic (and back again). Check out this weekend road trip in Connecticut!
In all, this weekend road trip in Connecticut will require about four hours of driving, making it a simple excursion for the weekend. Best of all, you'll be traveling right alongside the water, so you can always add in a few beach stops if you like!
The full itinerary can be fully customized: check out the route on Google Maps.
1. The Glass House
We'll start off our journey at The Glass House in New Canaan, CT. This is one of my favorite hidden gems in Connecticut. Even if you don't have a particularly strong interest in architecture, seeing a house built almost entirely out of glass is pretty incredible! The 200-acre park here has a number of unique buildings designed by famed architect Philip Johnson. Note that The Glass House is open seasonally, typically from mid-April through mid-December.
2. Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana
Our journey may have just started, but I figure by now it's probably about lunchtime, so why not stop at one of the most iconic restaurants in Connecticut? Frank Pepe Pizzeria has several locations throughout the state (and beyond), but back in 1925, it started off with the first restaurant, a simple location in New Haven. The pizza here has been named the best in the country, and the concept of Connecticut-style pizza (also known as apizza) was invented here in these coal-fired ovens. Restaurants don't come much more historic than this.
3. Mystic Seaport Museum
We'll be ending day 1 of our trip at one of the best museums in Connecticut: the Mystic Seaport Museum. This fascinating history museum celebrates this small town's maritime roots, and has a number of fascinating exhibits, including authentic ships on display in the harbor. The Seaport Village is a recreation of colonial-era Mystic, with historial reenactors going about their day in blacksmith shops, wood-carving studios, and more. The museum regularly hosts fun events that are great for all ages.
When you're looking for somewhere to spend the night, finding a vacation rental in Mystic, CT is a wonderful option. This small town thrives on tourism, so there are often plenty of Airbnb properties available. I love the look of this seaside cottage that can host up to four guests. It's got water views and is surrounded by nature.
For more information, check out the property's Airbnb listing. Note that it's got open balconies and a narrow spiral staircase that makes it unsuitable for kids under 12, so this is an adults-only option.
4. Gillette Castle State Park
You'll want to get up bright and early for day 2 of our adventure, because
Gillette Castle State Park is one of the most popular attractions in Connecticut. This 122-acre state park is home to an enchanting castle that looks straight out of a fairy tale, but you'll also find trails, a miniature railroad, and plenty of recreational opportunities here. The castle is open for tours at select times if you'd like to see the interior.
5. Stamford Museum and Nature Center
We'll end the trip with a visit to the wonderful Stamford Museum and Nature Center. This museum has a lot to offer visitors, with art, history, nature, and even agricultural sciences. There are 118 acres to explore here, and the farm houses some adorable critters.
