Few People Realize How Much Mining History Is Preserved In The Small Town Of Jamestown, Colorado

If you have ever studied Colorado history (or American history, for that matter), you know that the mining industry is a massive part of the Centennial State's birth and growth, as it brought in many new residents and helped establish new towns and communities. While mining is no longer as lucrative as it once was, there are many historic mining towns in Colorado where you can still get a glimpse of this vital time.  The tiny town of Jamestown, Colorado may not be the bustling Gold Rush metropolis that it once was, but its rise and fall is fascinating all the same:

Nestled away just west of Boulder, Jamestown is a tiny town of 250 residents that just so happens to be one of the oldest mining camps in Colorado.

The history of Jamestown, Colorado is similar to that of many Western boomtown communities. Once home to over 400 miners, the mines - at their peak - produced millions of dollars worth of gold and copper ore before going dry, leading to the near abandonment of the town. A series of floods only made matters worse.

However, Jamestown thrived from around 1863 to 1894 - becoming a hot spot destination for plenty of illicit and rowdy activities. Little by little, things changed.

Though it was nearly empty for years, Jamestown made a huge comeback and is now one of the best-preserved mining towns in Colorado - although much of the town has been relocated.

While 250 residents may sound like little in terms of activities, Jamestown still boasts ample mining history, beginning with the downtown area and its original homes, dance halls, and hotels.

In addition to these historic buildings, Jamestown has shops and restaurants, restored cabins, and outdoor recreation.

Two other semi-ghost towns, Ward and Gold Hill, are located just a short drive away.

And the fantastic scenery is packed with trails and off-road adventures!

It's a seriously gorgeous setting.

Like all great former mining towns, Jamestown is also close to many former mines, like the Blue Jay and Burlington Mines.

And, we hear, this town is a favorite for bicyclists. Pedal away!
