Spend Three Days Stretched Out On Three Lakefront Beaches On This Weekend Road Trip In Greater Cleveland
A three-day road trip in Ohio explores lakefront beaches and natural attractions in Greater Cleveland.
A three-day road trip in Ohio allows the slow unraveling of the beauty on the northeast side of the state. Particularly when it comes to our natural features — the lakes, rivers, and streams — plenty of places exist where we can soak up some sun surrounded by birdsong... and then hike through the surrounding wilderness for added adventure. These three lovely lakefront beaches in Greater Cleveland are surrounded by fun, and you can spend an entire weekend visiting them. Just don't forget the sunscreen on one of the best road trips in Ohio!
1. Hinckley Lake Spillway Swim Area: Hinckley
As the southernmost reservation in the Cleveland Metroparks, Hinckley Reservation is often overlooked by many Clevelanders. However, this beautiful landscape with a gorgeous 100-acre lake shouldn't be passed up. The Spillway area is super family-friendly, and many enjoy stretching out along its sandy shore... or splashing around in its waters! Remember that local wildlife loves this water, too. You might spot crayfish, salamanders, and waterfowl during your visit.
2. Buzzard Cove Pizzeria: Hinckley
After you enjoy some fun in the sun on the best weekend road trip in Ohio, treat yourself to some indulgent pizza and ice cream at Buzzard Cove Pizzeria. This teeny-tiny pizza joint is located near the mouth of Hinckley Reservation on Bellus Road, so it's the perfect spot to chill out and fuel up for a few. After you dig into your meal, you might want to play some mini-golf or swing by the driving range. This beloved small-town icon has been around since 1989, and it's the perfect place for the whole family to cool down, clean up, and prepare for the next phase of your journey: hiking! Check out the menu on the Buzzard Cove Pizzeria website.
3. Whipp's Ledges: Hinckley
Once you're re-energized, head back into Hinckley Reservation and get ready for exploration. Whipp's Ledges is a cool hiking spot that visitors of all ages can appreciate... as long as they can make it up its trails, as they are a bit more challenging due to the steep elevation. At this cool hiking spot, Sharon Conglomerate ledges and historic etchings greet visitors. This rock is a remnant from Ohio's days as an ancient ocean, and its sandy texture and honeycomb weathering patterns will fascinate little hikers.
4. Worden's Ledges: Hinckley
If you're not too tired after your visit to Whipp's Ledges, you have to visit its sister site across the reservation. Worden's Ledges has a similar layout, but its trails aren't quite as steep... and they're lined with incredible artwork. Gorgeous historic carvings (including a sphinx, a pirate ship, a cross and book, and more) await visitors in an emerald forest. Hiram Worden, the original owner of the property, manufactured chisels and often tested his products on the sandstone ledges behind his house. However, the majority of the carvings come from his artistic son-in-law, Noble Stuart. You'll love discovering the variety of carvings hidden in this portion of Hinckley Reservation.
5. Spitzer House Bed and Breakfast: Medina
While you're in Medina County, you might as well make the most of your visit! Head over near Medina Square for a stay in a historic and charming bed and breakfast. Spitzer House Bed & Breakfast is gorgeous and historic, and it dates back to 1890. It is so welcoming, in fact, that some choose to spend an eternity here. That's right... the house is said to be haunted! Don't worry, though. The ghosts are every bit as welcoming as the hosts, and you might even be treated to a handless sonata on the piano.
6. Lakeview Park: Lorain
On day two of our road trip, we're going to be exploring Lakeview Park in Lorain County. This gorgeous 20-acre stretch of Lake Erie loveliness is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset, and it's almost irresistible. In addition to the sandy and picturesque beach, this park also has a historic rose garden, an on-site café, and a playground to keep the little ones busy while you're soaking up some sun. This truly is a place where you can stop and smell the roses!
7. K Cream Korner: Lorain
Need to cool off from all that fun in the sun? Indulge in icy delicacies at K Cream Korner or K Cream Parlour. These beloved local ice cream shops serve up all your classic favorites, with their orange sherbet being a fan-favorite option for cooling off on warm sunny days. Add some pep to your step with sprinkles, hot fudge, and all your favorite fixings.
8. Black River Reservation, Day's Dam: Lorain
This lovely property attracts about a half-a-million visitors every year. It offers three main components: the Bridgeway Trail and the Steel Mill Trail together total 5.5 miles of paved trail that follows the Black River from Elyria to Lorain. And Day's Dam also features picnic tables and a playground, and it's the starting point for the tram service. But the Waterfall Trail is why we came.
9. Chateau de Charleston: Lorain
While you're in the area, treat yourself to some more R&R at a B&B. Chateau de Charleston is one of the loveliest local places to stay, and it has a rich history as it was built in 1909.
View the stars from its large, winding porch, and enjoy the modern amenities, including the state-of-the-art kitchen. This vacation and event rental offers an unforgettable ambiance, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time. Check for reservations on the Chateau de Charleston website.
10. Huntington Beach: Bay Village
Day three, baby! To wrap up our weekend adventure, we're going to head over to the picturesque community of Bay Village. Here, the Cleveland Metroparks' Huntington Reservation has a lovely beach that's sandy, clean, and overflowing with stunning views. Bring a picnic and unwind at the tables above the beach, or stretch out on the shore and meditate to the sound of lapping waves on one of the prettiest road trips in Ohio.
11. Bay Village Historical Society
Located in adjacent Cahoon Park, the Bay Village Historical Society is one of the best historical societies in Greater Cleveland. Check out the Rose Hill Museum, Osborn Learning Center, and the Cahoon family log cabin replica to learn oodles about the local landscape and its history. Bay Village might be just a tad bit older than you might think!
12. Lake Erie Nature & Science Center: Bay Village
The Lake Erie Nature & Science Center is a charming learning facility that all ages will love. Located on the very edge of Huntington Reservation, this learning center has live animals, hands-on classes, and ample volunteering opportunities.
