Ferndale’s downtown is often called Victorian Village because it has one of the largest collections of well-preserved Victorian buildings in California.

The downtown of Ferndale is lined with Victorian-era buildings that have been well-maintained and preserved and are a registered California Historical Landmark.

The Victorian charm of the downtown, complete with gas lamps and wooden boardwalks, gives visitors the feeling of stepping back in time. Although the architecture has remained unchanged, the town has experienced new businesses, well-known restaurants, and stores.

Ferndale was founded in 1852 as an agricultural community. Many of the town's Victorian-era buildings were constructed during this time. Due to its thriving dairy industry, it experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century.

Ferndale maintains a relatively slow pace of life, which adds to the feeling that time has stood still. The dairy industry is still alive and well in Ferndale. There are many family-owned dairies in the area.

Unlike many other cities that have undergone significant modernization and redevelopment, Ferndale has managed to retain its historic charm without extensive new construction or major changes to its streets.

Walking around the town and down Main Street is the main attraction of Ferndale, but the town has plenty of other activities and sites to see.

The Ferndale Repertory Theatre is one of Northern California’s oldest continuously-operating resident community theaters.
